DP Visual Arts Higher Level

My Exhibition:

CURATORIAL STATEMENT

Over the last 2 years of DP Art, the overarching themes seen in my artworks have been mental health, the exploration of self-identity, and the expression of emotions. All of my artworks in this exhibition are related to these themes and were also heavily influenced by my own personal experiences, as well as my emotional journey at the time of creation.

Throughout my exhibition, a common medium I used to help tell my story is acrylic paint. I explored the relationship between colour, space, and contrast, experimenting and exploring how to link these elements together to create unified and cohesive artworks. For my exhibition, I aim to showcase my emotional journey as an artist and teenager in high school, exploring my self-identity through these emotions. With an “L” shaped exhibition, viewers are able to start at any artwork they want and follow my journey, as everyone’s emotional journey is different, therefore I don’t want to restrict the audience. Additionally, when they take a step back, they’ll be able to fully see the extent of my journey as well as the varying emotions I experienced and expressed in my artwork. The audience may also notice that I’ve grouped my art pieces together in order to show an emotional journey from either side of my exhibition. When the audience looks at my exhibition, they'll notice that I've grouped my art pieces in similar and related emotions, with each artwork's emotion connecting to the ones displayed beside it.

My strongest artwork in terms of technique would be the piece titled Flowers in Bloom. With this piece, I aim to show the full extent of experimentation with colour, straying away from some of the darker and duller pieces in my exhibition. If the audience pays close attention to this piece, they may notice some similarities in the meaning behind this piece of art and with my other artworks in the exhibition, following my overall theme of self-expression and mental health.

My large-scale artwork, Heart of Chains, would be my strongest artwork conceptually. It explores personal experiences and represents the “inside look” of one’s heart, crippled with insecurity and the defence mechanism many of us grow to have through our own experiences, known as self-preservation. I represented the concept of self-preservation with the long metal chains attached to my artwork, seemingly “chaining the heart in” and away from danger. Not only did this artwork show glimpses of my mental state at the time of creation, but the viewer can also interpret this piece as a reflection of their own mental state of mind, in the present or in the past. Lastly, the artwork that showcases the most artistic growth throughout my journey in DP Art would be Amor. Created as a possible extension to Heart of Chains, this artwork showcases a completely opposite emotion of happiness and love. I believe this piece shows my growth not only as an artist, but as a person on the journey of exploring my identity, showing the development and change in my emotions and mental state throughout DP Art.

SOLITUDE

MEDIUM - 3D clay structure, fairy lights

Solitude is a hanging clay sculpture consisting of several jellyfish, exploring the concept of being alone with your own thoughts; isolation. Each small jellyfish is connected to a singular large jellyfish at the top, representing the viewer’s mind. Taking inspiration from jellyfish migration, each floating jellyfish symbolizes a plethora of thoughts floating around in the viewer’s mind. With this artwork, I hope to showcase the unsettledness yet slight calmness of solitude to the viewers, leaving an air of suspense for how the isolation will manifest.

EXISTENTIALISM

MEDIUM - Markers, water, cardstock paper, canvas16 x 20"

Existentialism is a participatory artwork that explores the concept of depersonalization and losing who you are. It has vivid colours all mixed together in the background, with plain silhouettes hovering over the front to represent a lack of self and uniqueness. This artwork would not be able to be created without the participation of other students, and involved a lot of experimentation with markers and water. With this artwork, I want to allow the audience to see my take on what it feels like to lose yourself and how it looks through my eyes as an artist.

HEART OF CHAINS

MEDIUM - Acrylic Paint on canvas, metal chains30 x 40"

Inspired by personal experiences and the large-scale artist Louise Bourgeois, Heart of Chains is a large-scale artwork that explores insecurity and self-preservation, open to the viewer’s interpretation. The chains represent the various insecurities you feel as a human, and how it can wrap you up and hold you down. With this artwork, I wanted to provide the viewers with an experience in which they were able to see themselves in the artwork, and are able to relate to it.

LOCKED AWAY

MEDIUM - Digital photography series8.5 x 11"

Inspired by the miniature-scale artist Slinkachu, Locked Away is a miniature artwork that explores the importance of communication and patience, and how they work together to build trust between others. The various photographs and difference in lighting shows the long process involved in building trust and opening up to others. With this artwork, I wanted to show how you’re able to gain someone’s trust with patience and communication, shown with a “frozen in time” concept with the ice.

STRINGS OF FATE

MEDIUM - Acrylic Paint on canvas, Yarn12 x 16"

Strings of Fate, like its title, explores the complex, yet detailed strings of fate. The dark background contrasts against the brightly coloured yarn in the middle, representing the intricate weaves between different people and emotions throughout time. I wanted to showcase the intertwinement of various emotions throughout different points in time, showing that there's always colourful meaning in your life, you just have to find it. Through this artwork, I want to show that once you find your “colourful meaning”, an occasionally dull life, doesn’t mean a life without meaning.

FLOWERS IN BLOOM

MEDIUM - Acrylic paint on canvas16 x 20"

Flowers in Bloom explores the viewer’s journey through finding happiness represented by the firework of white behind a bouquet of colour. If looked at closely, the viewer may find themselves recognizing a hidden message behind the flowers chosen for the bouquet. With this piece, I wanted to encourage the viewer to pay closer attention to the elements and subjects that make up the artwork, instead of viewing the piece through an aesthetic visual lens.

AMOR

MEDIUM - Acrylic paint on canvas16 x 20"

Amor explores the emotion of love and the difficulty in expressing various emotions coherently, represented by the pool of colour in the middle. The rough-edged heart allows the viewer to see “unedited” emotions, contrasting strongly with the uniform, straight-edged rays of colour emitted from the heart. With this piece, I hope to find a common ground with the audience, and allow them to feel a semblance of familiarity at the image they see in their head.

A PICTURE IN TIME

MEDIUM - Acrylic paint on canvas, fairy lights16 x 20"

A Picture in Time represents the emotion of nostalgia and the journey to letting go. It depicts one of Toronto’s most well-known landmarks, Honest Eds, in its past and in its present. The once famous department store has now turned into a construction site for new condominium buildings. With this artwork, I wanted to explore the boundaries of past vs. present, and showcase a journey of letting go and facing the future.

Tranquility - main.mp4

TRANQUILITY

MEDIUM - Digital video8.68 x 12"

Tranquility is a video created with images of the art piece Solitude. As a separate artwork, Tranquility focuses more on the calmness that solitude may bring you, in a positive light, while its counterpart steers slightly towards the negative direction. With the video, I hope to evoke a sense of calmness and silence upon the viewer, seeing the twinkling lights of the jellyfish and watching a slow-paced video.
