I am beyond sad that my doctor will not allow me to return to work. I let the kids know through Skype on Friday. I am working on having two gatherings this summer for our class and will put the details here as soon as I can. Kids can come to neither, one, or both and stay however long they want! (I will just need to know how many kids are coming so I know how much pizza to order.) The kids want to have it at the new Village Playground... but we'll have to find out when it opens!
Temporarily thinking for the first option -
Weekday - maybe a Monday in early July - Playground at Parma Park (Hilton Parma Corner's Road entrance) 5-7pm (I will have a kickball... but I won't be able to pitch.)
Weekday later in July - Village Elementary's new playground
Please take a look at the monthly calendar in your child's agenda as well! We did our May2 (which some people call June) calendar in our agendas!
ELA - We are shifting into opinion pieces. We are gathering information to make informed decisions. We are also exploring more with poetry. In particular we are focusing in on figurative language.
Math - We are nearing the end of our unit on fractions! We have explored lots of games: Cover, Uncover, Fractions Compare, and Roll Around the Clock. We've also explored multiplication of a fraction with a whole number. We always focus on the meaning and understanding what we are doing instead of memorizing a trick to get the right answer.
Science - We are nearing the end of our Earth Processes Unit as well. Students created a structure to withstand an earthquake. They are determining solutions to problems that are unavoidable (volcano eruptions, tsunamis, and earthquakes). We have continued with All Hands on Deck!! These are science stations that they kids work with a partner to explore. They need to read and understand directions and problem solve to complete each station. This week they involve measuring length, measuring volume of water, using balances, electricity, magnetism, and building ramps. They were a blast!
Social Studies - We are learning about growth in New York along with transportation by listening to The Eerie Canal. This is a time travel book where students who were on a field trip travel back in time.
Technology Integration - We continue to check our gmail every day. Students gave us feedback about how well they understand Kick Snowball by using FlipGrid. We responded through FlipGrid as well. We do have some writing challenges that go with How to Train Your Dragon through FlipGrid as well! We are using Google Slides and are sharing! We are using Kami to show our thinking about our reading as well.
