Speech or language impairment means a communication disorder, such as stuttering, impaired articulation, a language impairment, or a voice impairment, that adversely affects a child’s educational performance. A Speech Language Pathologist completes a speech evaluation to determine if a student meets eligibility criteria as a student with a Speech Impairment and if they require speech therapy services.
PHILOSOPHY
The Alief Independent School District is committed to providing for each student individualized educational services that are not only appropriate, but also least restrictive. The students receiving Speech Therapy Services will be provided the educational opportunity to maximize their mental, physical, social and emotional growth.
SPEECH PATHOLOGY STATEMENT
Believing that communication is the one skill that defines our human nature, it is the mission of the speech pathologist to: (1) create an atmosphere of trust that is conducive to learning, (2) maintain high expectations, and (3) facilitate the most appropriate methods of communication for all students.
NEED
A significant number of students within ALIEF ISD have been identified through assessments as needing Speech Therapy Services that are individualized, carefully planned, and closely monitored by a speech-language pathologist.
SERVICE
Speech and Language therapy is indicated when a student exhibits impairments in language and/or speech that interfere with communication at expected functioning levels. Students receive therapy for articulation, voice, language, or fluency concerns.
Each May, Better Hearing & Speech Month (BHSM) provides an opportunity to raise awareness about communication disorders and the role of ASHA members in providing life-altering treatment. For 2020, the theme was "Communication at Work."
