What is this class about ? The goal of this class is to gain a deep understanding of the fundamental concepts and principles of statistical inference. This involves familiarity with parametric and nonparametric methods as well as some principles of Bayesian inference. At the end of the semesters students should be able formulate a problem and choose appropriate statistical methodology to asses it from a theoretical and practical point of view using statistical software such as R, Python, Julia, Matlab etc.
If you have any questions about the class or else feel free to send an email to eliana.gelvez@fc.up.pt or jmfreita@fc.up.pt.
Interactions in class: I would like to promote an inclusive and supportive environment for this class, and I invite you to do so as well. I find it useful to follow these axioms from Federico Ardila's article "Todos cuentan".
Axiom 1: Mathematical potential is distributed equally among different groups, irrespective of geographic, demographic, and economic boundaries.
Axiom 2: Everyone can have joyful, meaningful, and empowering mathematical experiences.
Axiom 3: Mathematics is a powerful, malleable tool that can be shaped and used differently by various communities to serve their needs.
Axiom 4: Every student deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.
