Welcome!
The Society of Postdoctoral Scholars (SOPS) at the University of Kentucky (UK) is hosting their Annual Research & Career Symposium to showcase the work of UK postdoctoral scholars and fellows, promote networking among the UK research community, and encourage discussions on career paths for postdocs and PhD students.
Symposium features
Keynote address
Fighting the Misinfodemic: How quantitative misinformation misleads and public, and what scientists can do about it.
Professor of Biology at the University of Washington
Co-author of Calling Bullshit: The Art of Skepticism in a Data-Driven World
Featuring past postdoc and PhD professionals from a variety of 'bench' and 'non-bench' scientific careers
A hands on workshop to start developing a strategy and key documents needed when applying to faculty jobs
Including short research talks by postdocs and a postdoc Science Café talk competition (with cash prizes!)
Symposium objective
The objective of the symposium is to give UK postdocs an opportunity to share their research, celebrate their successes, network with peers, and learn about possible career options.
Who is invited?
SOPS mission is to promote the exchange of ideas across disciplines. As such, UK postdocs from all fields of research are invited to participate! SOPS also aims to foster cross-generational conversations with up and coming PhDs. As such, graduate students are welcome and encouraged to attend! In fact, given how broad and diverse the audience will be, postdoc presentations will be general and accessible to an wide audience.
How much does it cost?
There is no charge to present at or attend the symposium. SOPS and the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs provide funds to ensure access to these critical conversations to all junior scientists and scholars.
Where will it take place?
Recognizing that the COVID-19 pandemic is not over and also recognizing that social interaction is important for our mental health, SOPS and the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs decided to cater to both by organizing the symposium in a hybrid format. Speakers, guests, participants, and attendees will be able to select whether they would like to take part in the symposium in person or remotely.
Please note:
The symposium will take place in the Gatton Student Center, Grand Ballroom
Those attending in person will be required to wear masks at all time except when presenting at the podium and/or eating
Those attending remotely will be allowed to do so via Zoom
