Zach Metzler

zachmetzler@g.ucla.edu

Me inside the burned out trunk of a living Sequoia tree.

I'm a third year linguistics graduate student at UCLA. I combine primary fieldwork, archival work and generative theory to inform my research interests. I am particularly interested in the phonology-morphology interface and the nature of underlying representations as well as working with language communities directly to document and revitalize endangered languages.

My MA Thesis (Fresno State 2022) investigates the phonetic correlates of stress and stress patterns in Hidatsa, a Siouan language spoken on the Fort Berthold Reservation in North Dakota.

My current research investigates the nature of underlying representations of morphemes and the nature of the morphology-phonology interface. Central Sierra Miwwok verbal templates prove to be a particularly difficult case for existing frameworks to handle.
