The Directed Reading Program (DRP) pairs undergraduate students with graduate students for quarter-long independent study projects in mathematics. Projects culminate in a brief presentation given by the undergraduates in a DRP colloquium.
Program Goals and Expectations
Students will:
Gain experience with learning material independently at their own pace
Receive focused, individualized, one-on-one attention and guidance from a graduate student
Gain exposure to advanced mathematics, with greater depth and breadth than may be possible in a classroom setting, and possibly beyond the scope of the standard UCLA undergraduate curriculum
Interact with graduate students and meet other motivated undergraduates
Practice effectively communicating mathematics
Undergraduate participants are expected to:
Commit around 4 hours weekly to reading for their DRP.
Meet for at least one hour per week with their graduate mentor.
Prepare and deliver a brief presentation on their project to their peers at the conclusion of the quarter’s program.
Graduate mentors are expected to:
Consult with their mentee to determine an appropriate reading project and the project structure.
Meet for at least one hour per week with their mentee, and prepare as necessary for said meeting.
Aid the mentee with the preparation of the end-of-quarter presentation.
