"Professors need to be open to the diversity in student experiences and try to
account for those while forming syllabi and class lessons."
- Honors Collegium Student (Spring 2020)
The Honors Programs community believes in recognizing, embracing, and celebrating individual and cultural differences. We are committed to interacting with students and colleagues in ways that affirm people’s inherent value and acknowledge the diversity of their life experiences and perspectives.
The deeply rooted inequities and injustices that persist in American society are heartbreaking, infuriating, and intolerable. Recent events have exposed, once again, the racism and violence that plagues the everyday lives of African-Americans, Asian-Americans, and many marginalized communities. This moment demands that we listen, learn, and permanently embrace new ways of being and doing.
As educators, we recognize that our approaches to learning, being, and doing speak volumes to the students with whom we interact. Honors Programs is committed to fostering antiracist, inclusive learning environments where honest and compassionate conversations are normative; where each of us is seen, heard, and appreciated; and where every one of us is empowered by knowing that we belong. Together, we believe that we can — and will — contribute to creating a world that is more empathic, compassionate, equitable, and just.
We share the resources in the “work-in-progress” list embedded below to help enhance our community’s collective awareness, understanding, and capacity for taking meaningful action, particularly within classroom contexts. We hope you find this information to be useful and welcome your contributions.
