The IDEA Project

IDEA = Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access

and/or

IDEA = Instructional Design, Equity & Access

Background to this Project
Instructional designers support the integration of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Access (DEIA) in online course design and online teaching by faculty, instructors, and teaching assistants. Indirectly, ID work is critical to the infusion of DEIA in the learning experiences of all students in the University of California.  Instructional designers play a critical role in promoting DEIA excellence to faculty and instructors on the ten campuses of the University of California.

DEIA is an on-going project of self-improvement for everyone.  The intention in this project is to open spaces and opportunities for we IDs to evolve as DEIA-sensitive role models in our work on our campuses.  This DEIA leadership work is not always easy.  Faculty have been known to challenge instructional designers for their research evidence, assumptions, and expertise in DEIA. Instructional designers need to be able to communicate clearly, effectively and sensitively with instructors and TAs about DEIA.

This project supports the online work of all ten UC campuses in two main ways.  Firstly, the intention in this proejct is to make a significant contribution to the research on DEIA in instructional design and online teaching and learning.  Secondly, engagement by IDs in collegial and research-based activities will enhance their research-based knowledge and confidence for preparing materials for online course design, and for communicating and modeling state-of-the-art DEIA practices in their work with UC faculty and instructors.  This project represents an opportunity for the University of California (the funding body) to make a significant investment in its instructional designers, who are key stakeholders in promoting DEIA and digital inclusion for quality online and blended teaching and learning across the UC system.
