Deviant Voices A Cappella was founded by six music lovers in the Fall of 2010 and has been growing ever since. Our tight-knit group of members are UCLA students who have always loved to sing and have found their musical outlet and home in a cappella. You can find us sharing our passion performing at concerts on campus and events across Los Angeles. We always do things a little bit differently, and most importantly, we always have fun.
Catch us performing at Spring Sing '23 on May 19th at 7:30 pm!
Follow our IG @deviantvoicesatucla to follow our journey and keep up to date with us.

I can’t remember a time when I didn’t have an affinity for singing and performing. Disney Channel is to blame, specifically the show Hannah Montana. I always aspired to be like Hannah: a rockstar that exuded confidence, freedom, and relatability. Singing her songs on my karaoke machine at 6 years old made me feel like I could rule the world, exemplifying just how powerful music can be. My neighbors were probably annoyed by my constant belting and attempts at whistle notes, so I decided that I needed to take my talents outside the confinements of the four white walls in my room. It took a long time for me to feel comfortable being on a stage, but doing choir, dance, theater, and cheerleading in high school helped me tremendously. The stage became a symbolic place for me because it reminded me of my childhood dreams and allowed me to share my passions with other people. Even more so, it gave me the space to let loose, express how I feel, and most importantly, have fun. For me, singing is not only healing, but it also creates a sense of community that the world so desperately needs. With that being said, I hope that my performance tonight is able to do the same for others! Insta: @zanamaslesa

When a band’s first practice consisted of using buckets as a drum kit, that’s how you know a band is really makeshift. Makeshift is a band consisting of 4 Asian students (one of whom couldn’t make it) overcoming all odds to deliver their eclectic blend of influences ranging from jazz to punk to metal. The lead singer, Edwin, has been playing punk since high school while temporary drummer Shinsei has been immersed in the likes of J-rock and jazz. Josh, the guitarist, brings his metal and experimental influences into the mix to create a new taste of familiar sounds. The first song, Mr. Brightside, warms up the fast energy of the show which will then be followed by a brutal jazz/rock improv section. Finally, an untitled original song will end off the performance with a killer blend of punk, metal, and jazz. Prepare for an incendiary live performance, because music is 50% what you see and Makeshift is not holding anything back sonically or visually.

We are Gemini Genesis, a vocal and piano jazz duo that formed here at UCLA. We became friends through our A Capella group Deviant Voices, and we discovered we had a lot in common; we’re both freshmen, we live in the same dorm building, both enjoy performing jazz, and we’re both Gemini suns. After garnering the nickname “the twins” by some of our fellow a capella group members, we decided to name our musical act “Gemini Genesis,” representing the beginning of a new avenue of musical expression through our friendship. You’ll often find us in Hedrick Music Room 130, swinging a classic jazz standard or jazzyfying modern pop songs. Our A Capella group Deviant Voices shall be performing in Spring Sing this year, please check us out and support us and our friends on May 19th! https://www.instagram.com/deviantvoicesatucla/

Hey! We are Jordan Cierra and Lindsey Tran. We met at UCLA’s music club during fall quarter of 2022 and have been doing acoustic sets since then. Jordan Cierra is a second year student studying psychology here at UCLA and is an aspiring singer songwriter. You can find her on all social media platforms @jordan.cierraa (except twitter because it scares her). Lindsey Tran is a first year pre-psychobio major on the pre-physician assistant track and is a self-taught guitarist who has been playing for ~2.5 years now. You can find her on instagram @its_lindyyy. Today, we will perform a cover of “Creep” by Radiohead and one of Jordan Cierra’s original songs (with a mashup twist). Hope you enjoy!
