To understand the story behind every absent student, we had to interview the families. 82% of families said that their child was missing due to illness or fear that their child would be exposed to illness after receiving notice of a COVID-19 outbreak in the classroom. This data provided context about absenteeism in kindergarten. It also highlights the immense fear of the covid-19 pandemic, which still plagues inner-city communities.
