Interrupting Bias to Cultivate Inclusivity
Workshop Description
This workshop builds on concepts and strategies learned in Creating Inclusive Classrooms to help instructors develop knowledge and skills for interrupting bias and managing hot moments in the classroom. Participants will engage in and practice key concepts including: vulnerability, active listening, identifying and addressing triggers, recognizing intent versus impact, and uncovering various types of bias. Participants will walk away with a deeper understanding of how bias impacts them from both the students’ and instructor’s perspectives and concrete tools for troubleshooting friction in the classroom. Note: We highly encourage you to take Creating Inclusive Classrooms before participating in this workshop
Learning Objectives
Recognize and be able to articulate the role of bias in the classroom.
Identify prevention and intervention strategies that can help mitigate bias and cultivate inclusivity.
Practice strategies to interrupt bias in the context of classroom conversations.
