Principal Investigator

Carissa N. Eisler [she/her]

Assistant Professor || Department of Chemical Engineering, UCLA

Carissa is an Assistant Professor in the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department at UCLA. She received her B.S. in Chemical Engineering from UCLA, and her M.S. and Ph.D. with Harry Atwater from Caltech. Before coming to UCLA, she was a postdoctoral scholar with Paul Alivisatos at UC Berkeley. Eisler was a recipient of the Everhart Distinguished Graduate Student Lecturer Award (2015) and the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Postdoctoral Fellowship (2016-2018).

At the intersection of photonics and chemistry, Dr. Eisler’s research integrates optical design, materials chemistry, and transport phenomena to understand the complex propagation of light and energy through nanostructured materials.  She is passionate about teaching and mentoring the next generation of scientists and engineers who will address the interdisciplinary challenges of global energy usage and production. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, print-making, and obsessing over her two cats, Jujubee and Louise.

Graduate Students

Mounika Dudala

PhD Student||  Department of Chemical Engineering || Joined September 2021

Mounika is a third-year PhD student interested in researching semiconducting nano-materials and understanding the surface chemistry and interactions between the layers for better photovoltaic devices. In her free time she likes to read fiction novels, go hiking and learn new sports (tennis).

Alexandra (Sasha) Grishchenko

PhD Student|| Department of Chemical Engineering || Joined September 2023

Sasha is a first-year Ph.D. student studying angular light emission of single perovskite nanocrystals. She earned her B.S. in Chemical Engineering from UCLA in 2023, and in her free time she enjoys crocheting, cooking new dishes, and watching sci-fi films!

Daniel (Danny) Katz

PhD Student ||  Department of Chemical Engineering || Joined August 2021

Danny is a third-year Ph.D. student studying solution-processed fabrication of photon-trapping environments designed to improve the efficiency of photovoltaic devices. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 2021 with a BSE in Chemical Engineering. Outside of lab, he enjoys staying active and exploring Los Angeles.

Gabriela (Gabby) Nerhood

PhD Student|| Department of Chemical Engineering || Joined September 2023

Gabriela (Gabby) is a first year master's student researching simplified fabrication of photon trapping devices to improve photovoltaic systems well as using these fabrication methods to improve teaching photonics concepts to underrepresented groups in hope to inspire an eduction in science related fields. She graduated from Chapman University in 2022 with a B.S. in Chemistry and a minor in computational science. In her free time she enjoys running, cooking and finding her next litter of foster kittens.

Lindsey Parsons

PhD Candidate || Department of Chemical Engineering || Joined August 2020

Lindsey is a fourth-year Ph.D. student researching nanocrystal interface chemistry and photonic device design with a focus on photovoltaic applications. She earned her B.S. from Auburn University in Chemical Engineering in 2020. In her free time, she enjoys rock climbing, experimental desserts, and keeping REI in business.

Brendan Russ

PhD Student|| Department of Chemical Engineering || Joined June 2022

Brendan is a third-year Ph.D. student researching nanophotonic interactions for high-efficiency infrared photonic device applications. He earned his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from UCLA in 2021, and enjoys rock climbing, reading, and hiking in Malibu.

Undergraduate Students

Hannah Elenteny

Undergraduate Student || Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering || Joined October 2023

My name is Hannah Elenteny and I am a second-year undergraduate student studying Chemical Engineering. I am interested in renewable energy and am currently working on a nanoparticle visualization project using a custom laser microscope setup. In my free time, I enjoy running, rock climbing, and reading.

Cody England

Undergraduate Student || Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering || Joined March 2023

My name is Cody England and I am a senior undergraduate student studying chemical engineering and applied math at UCLA. I am interested in researching synthetic pathways of semiconducting nanomaterials and how quantum effects impact efficacy of light emission. In my free time, I enjoy rock climbing, running, and reading.

Leonna Gaither

Undergraduate Student || Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering || Joined June 2022

Hi my name is Leonna Gaither and I am a fourth year undergraduate student studying Chemical Engineering. I am interested in semiconducting nano-materials and renewable energy. In my free time I enjoy trying new food and spontaneously trying new things!

Ella Levine

Undergraduate Student || Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering || Joined January 2021

My name is Ella Levine and I am a second year Chemical Engineering student. I am interested in researching luminescent concentrator designs that will be appropriate and sustainable for providing energy to large communities in Los Angeles (and other communities on established grids). In my free time I love to hike, take dance classes, and eat delicious food.

Want to work with us?

We are actively recruiting exceptional and motivated group members who want to gain expertise in the synthesis and optical characterization of inorganic nanocrystals and in designing transformative optoelectronic devices.

Graduate students: Please apply to the MS or PhD program at UCLA, and contact Carissa in November / December. All graduate students must be applying to the UCLA MS or PhD program in order to be considered.

Undergraduate students: Please fill out the Undergraduate Research Interest form to let us know a little bit more about you and what kind of work you'd like to do. We'll check these at the start of each quarter.

Postdoctoral scholars: We are unfortunately not recruiting postdoctoral scholars at this time. Please check back soon!
