Visiting students do not take Syracuse's online placement exam because the system is not able to refer to placement scores of visiting students. If you have some exposure to or past study of Spanish and are unsure what Syracuse course to take, request SU Spanish course syllabi to share with an advisor in the languages department of your home school. They should be able to help determine the appropriate level. Note that all students' Spanish registrations will be confirmed in Madrid with assessment on the first day of classes.
The study of Spanish grammar and language is a program requirement for all undergraduates.
Every SU student, including native and heritage speakers of Spanish, must take the online Spanish placement survey/exam. The only exceptions are if...
One or more SPA classes appear on your Syracuse transcript. Then you take the next course in sequence.
You have already taken SU’s Spanish online placement exam. Then enroll in the course level per your placement exam score.
If you don't meet one of those exceptions, take the online survey/placement exam NOW. If you don’t do this first, you will not be able to register for Spanish. (Even beginners need to take the short survey to be permitted to register for SPA 101.)
You do NOT need to request access to the placement exam; our office has already arranged access for you.
To access the exam:
Log into Blackboard
From the Blackboard Institution page, select Course
Set selections for Select Terms: Current Courses and Filters: Open Courses
Select Placement Exams (1261 or 1271 whichever is displayed at time of taking exam)
Choose the desired language (Spanish)
The assessment begins with a survey. After finishing the survey, return to the specific language folder for the next step. You will either receive your placement or there will be a link to open the assessment.
After finishing the placement assessment, return to the specific language folder again for your language placement results.
TIPS:
The purpose of the online placement exam is to identify your language level and allow you to register for the appropriate course during online registration in June.
Please allow time for the placement exam score to populate in MySlice.
Should you have any issues while taking the survey or assessment, please email madridacademic@syr.edu. We may need to refer you to the Languages Department Additional information or the Help Desk.
ALL STUDENTS' language levels will be confirmed after your first lessons in Madrid.
* May include native or heritage speakers.
