A required Signature Seminar,
A minimum of 12 credits in addition to the Signature Seminar, and
At least one Spanish language course.
IMPORTANT! Due to the Spanish immigration requirement that undergraduate students enroll on a full-time basis, you may not drop below 12 credits (excluding any Signature Seminar credits) at any point during the semester.
The online registration system limits students to a total of 17 credits. Please email Jeanne Chu ASAP (no later than November 7) if you plan to take more than 17 credits. You may take 19 credits without incurring additional tuition charges.
Course-related field trips are mandatory to attend, and some may take place over the weekend. You should therefore not make travel plans before the final field study schedule is issued to you in Madrid (after the Add deadline). Because course-related field trips take precedence, note that you make any personal travel plans at your own risk and might need to rearrange them at your own expense.
Identify your language level and consult the table below.
Please also see Spanish course descriptions on our website. After you determine your Spanish level, move on to read about Signature Seminars.
* May include native or heritage speakers.
If you are unsure of your language level, request Spanish course syllabi from your Madrid Program Advisor or Jeanne Chu, and consult with your home school's Spanish language department. Your language level will be confirmed by faculty in Madrid.

If you're a Syracuse student and have no SU Spanish class on your transcript, take the online Spanish language placement survey/exam before submitting your Student Advising Form.
If MySlice does not show a Spanish exam result for you, navigate to the Placement Exams section in MySlice > Student Home > Advising. Illustrated instructions are available online.
Beginners, native and heritage speakers of Spanish—AND students with AP, IB, or other college-level or transfer Spanish credit—must take the placement survey/exam. (YES, even beginners! To receive your SPA 101 placement, you must complete the survey/exam. It requires no study and takes only a few minutes.)
Without a placement exam result, MySlice will not allow you to register online for your Spanish class. You can view your results in MySlice > Advising > Placement Exams > Placement Exam Scores. After you have your result, move on to Signature Seminars.
IMPORTANT! The survey/exam was written for first-year university students. When asked how many years you studied Spanish in high school, respond with your total years of Spanish study, whether in high school, at a previous college, or both.
