This class critically examines US history as chronicled in Broadway musicals, with a strong focus on Black, Indigenous, and Migration Studies. What stories do we sing to ourselves about America? Are they lies?

As part of a global study of environmental injustice, students will visit several sites connected to the UK’s colonial and racial past and present; explore contested exhibitions in the British Museum, visit the memorial wall at Greenwich Tower, and travel downriver to Pocahontas’s burial site in Gravesend.
