Field study courses offered during the semester
GEO300.2/PSC300.2 Green Britain? Science, Devolution and Climate Controversies in the UK
HST464/PSC464/REL328 Borders in Flux: Identities & Conflict in Ireland
Each course meets as intensive field studies during the semester. Students will be required to attend two overnight trips from 30 August - 1 September and 13-15 September, in addition to a few ad hoc activities in London and follow-up assignments.
For "Borders in Flux", destinations include Dublin, Derry and Belfast, where students will discover how Ireland’s past is inseparably entangled with its present and how old wounds fester in current politics. The class will go on a bike tour, see street art, and consider tourism around The Titanic and ‘Game of Thrones’.
In "Green Britain", students travel to Cornwall, Wales, and Scotland to examine environmental policy and science. Activities include a dolphin-spotting boat ride, a trip down a coal mine, and a tour of a sustainable parliament.
Notes:
Students may enroll in only one of these classes, as the weekend field studies conflict.
Architecture students may enroll, despite the Friday overlap with ARC561, as the courses will support learning in the Survey course and field studies professors will coordinate with the Architecture faculty.
These courses do count toward the 12-credit enrollment minimum for the London Center.
The first intensive weekend runs in parallel with the mandatory field studies component of London Center orientation; students enrolled in these courses will attend their class weekend in lieu of Center programming. Housing and academic orientation will conclude in London on 29 August, allowing students to participate in "Green Britain" and "Borders in Flux" without missing important content.
