The students have received coloured handouts that will be of great assistance to them while they work.
OPENERS
By adding OPENERS to our sentences they instantly become more interesting. The students are asked to change the beginning of each sentence by choosing from 6 different ways.
1)SUBJECT - a noun (person, place, thing) - The tortoise felt confident and challenged the hare to a race.
)PREPOSITIONAL - use a prepared list (in student’s booklet) In a hurry, the young girl raced to beat the storm.
“LY” - use a prepared list (in student’s booklet) Calmly the triumphant tortoise placed his foot over the finish line.
“ING” “ED” - Shrieking with fear, Peter scrambled to evade the rabid wolf.
CLAUSAL - (when, while, where, as, since, as, if, although) If you use a variety of sentence openers, your writing will improve.
VSS - very short sentence; consists of 5 words or less and usually comes after a longer sentence. The lion bellowed and thundered.
They are not to use the same opener twice in a row but can use it again in the paragraph, if needed. The students are asked to make the paragraph their own by substituting in words and adding extra details such as adjectives. This will prepare them for when they must use note taking to produce their paragraph.
DRESS-UPS
These are located within the sentence the student write. There are 6 dress-ups to choose from:
WHO/WHICH - adjective clause in the middle of a sentence. The lion who felt he would never be able to disentangle himself from the hunter’s net was most grateful for the appearance of the little mouse.
“LY” - use a prepared list (in student’s booklet) The fox casually mentioned how pleased he would be to hear the crow sing.
BECAUSE - The hare was delighted because he knew it would be an easy race.
STRONG VERB - use thesaurus, banned words list, suggested synonyms, etc. The car screeched and careened down the road.
QUALITY ADJECTIVE - use thesaurus, banned word list, synonyms, etc. The twirling, parachuting leaves.
WHEN, WHILE, WHERE, SINCE, AS, IF, ALTHOUGH - adverb clause in the middle of the sentence. The hare dozed peacefully while the tortoise plodded persistently.
DECORATIONS
These are located within the sentence the student write. Again, there are 6 decorations to choose from.
Question
Who was tricked?
What was that person's name?
Conversation - Each time there is a change of speaker there is a new paragraph.
"Why won't they believe me?"Peter screamed in despair. "I have never lied to them." Peter's scream turned into a soft whimper like a child who lost his toy.
3sss - 3 short staccato. The sentence should be quick, fast and to the point.
4:3:2 Killer bees invaded America. Viciously they attacked. Humans suffered.
3:3:3 Savage bees attacked. Violently they killed. Nobody was spared.
2:2:2 Bees invaded. They marauded. Humans perished.
Other possible patterns: 5:4:3, 5:5:5, 4:4:4
Always use descending patterns and avoid increasing the pattern because it has less impact.
Dramatic Opening - Closing- A short dramatic sentence (VSS) before the topic sentence, combined with another dramatic VSS after the clincher sentence.
Hungry flames roared. (opening) Killer bees invaded. (opening)
The farm lay in ashes. (closing) The nightmare had begun. (closing)
Simile/Metaphor- Simile compares something to something else using like or as.
Metaphor says something is something else, and cannot be true.
As tough as nails.
She cried like a baby.
She has a heart of stone.
Alliteration- Three or more words beginning with the same letter or letter blend sound. Alliteratives may be seperated by conjunctions or articles, short pronouns or prepositions.
...big, beautiful, butterflies...
...crude, crafty, and cunning..
...clumsily he clawed and clambered up the cliff...
GOOD LUCK!!!!

The goal is to accumulate 150 YAA awards as a class. If you do so I will rent a movie for you guys.
How do I receive a YAA award?
If you receive a grade of 75% or better on a major test or better your last test mark in the same subject you will receive a YAA award.
Example: 81% - YAA award
62% on a math test and your next math you score a 65% - YAA award
Clean desk check done when I feel like it - 1 YAA award for each student who has what I believe to be a clean desk
The room is left clean everyday of the week- 5 YAA awards on Friday
Fines
You will be fined if:
10 YAA if the room is not clean at the end of each day. That means chairs are put away, desk tops have nothing on them, shelves are neat, white boards are clean
10 YAA awards if your books are not ready for class
5 YAA awards per student if your locker is not clean when I check them
50 YAA awards if anyone is sitting in my chair, going through my desk without permission, or using the electrical equipment without permission
Some fines may be added as the year goes on. Green slips will still be given on top of the fines.
Last year we had 3 YAA award parties, try and beat it.
