COURSE REQUIREMENTS
In order to be eligible to receive credit for this class, students will be expected to fulfill the following three obligations: 1) attend class, 2) participate in class discussions, and 3) complete all exams, quizzes, papers, and/or any assigned work at a passing level.
All assignment for this class must be completed in pencil or blue/black pen only. All assignments must contain the students’ first and last name. All assignments must be handed in on the due date. I will deduct points or refuse to accept assignments that do not conform to these guidelines.
You are responsible for the care of the book assigned to you. Damages to your book are your financial responsibility. You must bring your book to class everyday. I recommend placing a book cover over your text to help protect it from damage. I also recommend that you dedicate a single notebook for this class.
There will be an exam for each chapter covered in class. Exams will be completion (fill in the blank) or multiple choice matching and contain approximately 30-75 items for a total of 90-150 points. Exams are comprehensive and cover material from lecture as well as from the text.
There are several quizzes throughout the semester. The quizzes are approximately 10-25pts each and are completion or multiple choice matching. The quizzes cover one section, and are usually based on the lecture for that section. The quizzes are reported in advance. Surprise or “pop” quizzes are 5pts. They are oral quizzes, and follow a lecture if there is enough class time left. Pop quizzes cannot be made up, but an excused absence on the day of a pop quiz excuses the student from the quiz. An unexcused absence results in a zero for the pop quiz.
Daily work consists of study guides or other types of worksheets that can be completed by reading the chapter or using your notes from lecture. The points from daily work are weighted the same as quizzes and tests. Failure to complete daily work or hand it in on time is a sure way to forfeit credit for the course. Points missed by not handing in daily work cannot be made up.
Your grade in this class is determined by your percentage of the total points offered. All assignments are weighted the same. Therefore, a 50-point study guide is worth the same as a 50-point test. The grading scale is as follows: A=90-100, B=80-89%, C=70-79%, D=60-69%. Grades are rounded up and plus and minus grades are possible; i.e., 89.5% = A-. Students’ current grades in class are posted every day according to a student ID number that is provided at the beginning of the quarter. A comprehensive grading scale is also posted. Your percentage for each quarter equals 45% of your semester grade, and your semester exam equals 10% of your semester grade.
Tests and quizzes (other then pop quizzes) that are missed may be made up for full points at anytime during the quarter. Late daily work assignments receive a deduction of 50%. After one full day beyond the due date, they are not worth anything and should not be handed in. An assignment is considered late if it is not handed in immediately when asked for. If present when an assignment is given, but are absent on the day the assignment is due, it must be handed in the day you return.
PARENTAL NOTIFICATION
Parents or guardians will be notified by mail each week of students who are missing quizzes or tests and/or if the student is receiving a failing grade or is in danger of failing.
BEHAVIOR IN CLASS
I expect students to come to class prepared to learn. If you do not wish to learn, I cannot make you. However, I will not tolerate any student behavior that takes away from another student’s opportunity to learn, or disrupts my class or teaching. This includes sleeping in class, which I will not allow. Students who violate the behavior rules for my class will be removed from class and parents notified. Further problems will result in dismissal from class and forfeit of credit.
FOOD & DRINK
Students may not bring pop or any beverage other then water into class. Students may have gum if it is not disruptive to the class. I may alter this policy at any time if circumstances require or permit it.
CELL PHONES/ELECTRONIC DEVICES
Cell phones must be turned off and placed in phone pouch during class hours. Electronic devices of any kind may not be accessed during class without prior approval of the instructor.
VISITORS TO CLASS
Visitors to class will not be admitted. Visitors will need to go to the High School office or Counselor’s office for the duration of the hour.
