People mainly worship Guanyin in the Yonglian Temple. A Golden Guanyin on the third floor is unique to this temple. At first, the believers built a small temple to seek wealth. Because local people would like to express their gratitude for Guanyin, they made this magnificent statue with gold. Since people successfully made their dreams come true after worshiping God here, more and more people came here to pray for fortune. Soon, the temple has become a religious center for residents.
During the activity, you can see magnificent floats, lion dances, dragon dances, and traditional musical bands. Each procession expresses reverence to the Buddha in its unique way. The procession route passes through the main streets of Lujhou, allowing the crowd to appreciate the spectacular parade activities. In addition to the procession of cultural activities, the celebration at Lujhou's Yonglian Temple includes various cultural performances. Among them, the Taiwanese opera performance is a significant highlight, which makes the audience all eyes.
There are still many things worth exploring in this temple. For instance, it has intricate mud sculptures, colorful paintings, wood carvings, and stone carvings. What makes it incredibly unique is its "雀替" (que ti) decorations, which are distinct to Chinese culture and can be seen at the ninety-degree angles of the pillars. Most of these decorations depict animals or dragons, but what sets Yunglian Temple apart is its "飛天樂伎" (fei tian yue ji). Just imagine an ancient ethereal beauty flying gracefully in the heavens! As you look closer at these delicate crafts, you'll be able to appreciate the craftsmanship and dedication of the artisans.
You will notice numerous vendors nearby after visiting the Lujhou Center of Belief. These small noodle shops, known as "切仔麵" (qièzǎi miàn), originated in Lujhou. Selling in a street vendor style, it is just like the hotdog stands you will find on the streets of the United States. Owners push small carts and set up a few small chairs beside the vendor. Without any air conditioning or fans, customers still keep coming, which manifests Taiwan's rich street food culture. What sets "切仔麵'' apart is the unique cooking process involving a Taiwanese gesture called "摵" (tshi̍k), which is the rhythmic shaking of the noodles up and down while cooking, representing a distinctive technique in the preparation of this dish.
This street vendor has elevated this technique. They cook each bowl of "切仔麵" (Qiezi Noodles) with exceptional craftsmanship and strictly stick to the classic "slicing" motion. During the process of making 切仔麵, this vendor often uses a bamboo strainer (煮麵的網子) to cook the noodles, ensuring they maintain their springiness. An authentic bowl of 切仔麵 undergoes precise slicing and adds a rich broth, making a delicious and flavorful soup. Furthermore, adding bean sprouts and various condiments enhances this dish's rich texture and flavor. Although "切仔麵" (qiè zǎi miàn) may appear simple, it truly embodies the charm of Taiwanese street food. It not only satisfies people's taste buds but also incorporates the passion and skills of street vendors. The founder's talent and dedication to bringing "切仔麵" to more dining tables have propelled this humble yet incredibly delicious dish to flourish in Taiwan's culinary field, making it a people's favorite.
