Create a Calm down Corner at Home

In school, students have access to a break space/calm down corner in all school settings. You can continue this practice at home by creating a calm down corner in your own space. Calm down corners are helpful for students when they are feeling frustrated, tired, or anxious. At school, students ask to use the calm down corner, set a timer (3-10 minutes), use calming tools to self-regulate, and then return to the task they were working on. Below are examples of break spaces and a link for instructions on how to create one in your own home.

How are you feeling today?

Check in with your students at the beginning, middle, or end of each day on how they are feeling. Share how you are feeling too! Sometimes it's hard to identify our feelings, so we use this chart to remind us of feeling words. Students recognize that they might have more than one feeling at a time.

If your student is feeling 4 or above, you may want to take a break. Many students at Cascade use GoNoodle as a break from work or to calm down after recess or lunch.
