I had the enormous pleasure of visiting Ms. Le's 2nd grade math lesson. The students walked into a dim classroom and immediately greeted me - excited to transition from PE to math. Knowing it was going to be tough one, Ms. Le asked students about what they might put into their "hot chocolate" before they practiced a breathing exercise - blowing out their imaginary hot chocolates!
After getting settled, students distributed white boards and they were ready to begin - learning addition by splitting 10s and 1s. They warmed up with a review using the document camera and bundled up popsicle sticks. Students guessed the numbers Ms. Le displayed with the camera.
Next, they started addition. Using the whiteboard app, Ms. Le wrote an addition problem on the board and modeled for students how to solve it. Then, students solved problems on their own whiteboards and showed Ms. Le the answer. They went a step further by solving problems on the board together with a split screen. Two students could show their learning while others worked on their own with the white boards.
Time for a brain break! Using gonoodle.com, students chose which video they wanted and had a super quick dance party.
Now back to math! They ended by playing addition bingo. Ms. Le vs. the students. The lesson was extended by moving into centers. Ms. Le could check in with students in a small group who she noticed needed some more support, while others played bingo or challenged each other with another math game.
Thank you so much Ms. Le's second grade classroom for giving such a good example of what a supportive and engaged community looks like!
