Announcements

  • Reading logs should be turned in every day. Students should be reading at least 20 minutes every night.

  • October 7th: No School (teacher work day)

Reading

  • Our first unit focuses on fiction reading strategies. Students will be focusing on how their character develops throughout the story. They will also be learning to determine themes, or lessons, from their stories. 4th graders will be writing and discussing how their characters change throughout a story and how their traits develop. Every day, students will write about their reading on sticky notes. They might use sentence stems like the ones listed below.

            • I think...

            • I wonder...

            • I predict...

            • I notice...

Math

  • Unit 1 begins the year with a study of multiplication and division, focusing on models, strategies, and multiplicative comparisons. Students will use number lines, arrays, and ratio tables to problem solve. Students will use area models to investigate factors and multiples and prime and composite numbers, while also reviewing strategies for finding single digit multiplication facts. In Unit 2, students will investigate place value patterns. We will introduce using area models to solve multiplication problems and the idea of remainders in division.

Writing

  • In our first writing unit, students will be writing realistic fiction stories. They will start by brainstorming many story ideas. They will be writing two stories during this first unit. Some skills that we will be working on are focusing our stories on one problem, using paragraphs to separate dialogue and events in the story, and balancing dialogue and character action. We will also focus on using proper punctuation and spelling.
