Lesson: Read to Infer the Meaning of Words

  1. Watch the video lesson about reading to infer the meaning of words.

  2. Choose one of the three choices below. Read, listen & identify words you do not understand. Then use all the tools you have to help infer the meaning of the word.

  • Think about what I do know about orcas.

  • Consider the context, for that word.

  • Read the words and sentences that come before and after the word because they will help me to infer the meaning.

  2. Choose one of the three nonfiction choices below. Think about how the facts lead to inferences and how you can draw conclusions from those facts.

  • Stop, think & react at different parts in the article.

Practice doing the work of a Journalist and be as descriptive as possible with the 5Ws!

Instructions: After you have set-up your paper, observe this moment captured in the photo. Doing the work of a Journalist, write the information and the details as notes in your notebook.

Question to consider: Why do you think The New York Times editors chose this moment to share with the public?

Use the model below to help form your complex sentence:

Examples of news article with a complex sentence at the start of the article that tell the reader the most essential information!

Your Task to Complete:

  1. Live a wide awake life by seeing stories in everyday moments. (Thinking like a Journalist! )

  2. Collect stories by journaling 3 events, using the 5Ws, in your notebook.

  3. Practice creating beginnings to each story using the sentence model.

  4. Go back and pick the story or stories you want to tell.

  5. Record yourself on Flipgrid reporting the beginning of the news story like Ms. Cardentey did in the video. Be as creative as you would like ( a news report, create a background, or simply read your beginning.)

Extension: Cover a full story using your 5Ws! Do this by writing a news article about one of the events in your notebook and record yourself on Flipgrid reporting the story!
