Dear families and students:

Throughout this week, we have provided two different reading activities for you to choose from. Both activities have students reading, thinking, learning, and responding to a biography--a text about a real person and real life events.

Choice #1: Biography on Colin Kaepernick

Choice #2: Biography on Katherine Johnson

Choose one biography you want to read... or, read both!


Colin Kaepernick

Civil Rights Activist and American Football player:

Known for for kneeling during the national anthem in protest of police brutality and racial inequality in the United States.

Katherine Johnson

Black NASA Mathematician:

Helped send the first American astronauts to space... one of the most celebrated black women in Space Science

Reading Activity Choice #1: Colin Kaepernick

Today's Work:

  1. Watch Video #1

  2. Summarize chapter 1

  3. Watch Video #2

  4. Summarize Chapter 2

  5. Independently read nonfiction for 30 minutes

Today's Goals:

  • Summarize after each chapter, saying and writing the main idea(s) and supporting details

You May Need:

  • Your reading notebook or some paper

  • Something to write with

  • Nonfiction books (or Myon/online books) for independent reading

When you have strong feelings, thoughts or wonderings as you read about Colin Kaepernick, make sure to find an adult in your family and have a conversation with them as you read!
