Liberalism is a mass of contradictions: It was the set of ideas that enabled people from Europe to America to throw off tyrannical dictators. But it has also been used to justify slavery and the continued existence of poverty.
This part of the course looks at the core beliefs that liberals can agree on, but then also at the tensions that divide them. If it is so contradictory, does it even make sense to describe people such as Thatcher and Obama as liberals at all?
