I asked our second year students to reflect on their experiences of BTEC Popular Music and here's what they had to say...
"Pop Music taught me so much about the music industry. It showed me all the different opportunities I could take when I was unsure of where to go next. I've now got a place at Leeds College of Music. I'd recommend BTEC Music to any aspiring musicians."
Billy Dunn | Drums
"I took three A levels and the BTEC Music course. It was nice to have a subject doing something I enjoyed alongside more academic work. Even the written coursework was good, getting exposed to new genres I'd have never listened to otherwise. It was nice being with people who liked music as much as me. I met the singer in my band though the course. We also learnt about the music industry which helped us then write our own songs, release them on Spotify and get gigs. I'll be making music even though I plan to study Science at university."
Joe Riordan |Guitar
"The Pop Music course opened my eyes to variety of different musical genres which I have then fused with my own tastes and musical style. The course enhanced my confidence as a performer with a band and enabled me to work with lots of other musicians. I learned how to collaborate when writing songs which will come in handy when I go on to study Songwriting at Leeds College of Music."
Jess Mahon| Vocals & Guitar
"Pop Music at QE allows you to develop and learn all the skills you will need to be a great musician. Over the two years you play a wide variety of music from different genres and eras. In second year I especially liked projects in Jazz and Funk. You learn to become self critical and understand your strengths and weaknesses. You also develop listening skills and the ability to analyse music, especially useful for me as I'm going to study music at university. The course has had a huge role in my development as a musician."
Abi Gould| Drums & Piano
"BTEC Pop Music has made me an exponentially better musician. It helped me function well in group based musical projects which is vital if you want to get a foothold in the industry. It's easily my favourite subject from my time at QE; I couldn't recommend it enough. Plus Mike and Steve are sound so you'll have a laugh too!"
Jack Greenslade | Vocals & Guitar
"I genuinely have had the best time. Choosing Popular Music was one of the best choices I made. I've learnt so much more than I thought I would. I'll be watching the youtube videos we recorded until I'm old. The course inspired me. I couldn't be more grateful."
Millie Readshaw | Vocals
"I loved every second of my popular music course! I was always so exited to go to popular music because of the amount of fun we all had during the lesson. I personally learnt so much, not only about playingbass guitar with better technique, but I also learned so much about pop music history. Mike, the teacher was by far my favourite because of the amount of enthusiasm he had for the course and music. He loved teaching us new things and we all loved learning them. I’m not going to university to do anything with music but I am so glad I chose to do it as a subject at QE. I made so many new friends."
Cara Weddell | Bass
"The Popular Music course is fantastic. It has allowed me to build my confidence as a performer. I have also learned to work well with other singers in harmony. I particularly loved writing our own songs in different genres. It allowed us to get creative and confidently voice our ideas.
In other classes at QE, you may have a few friends in the lesson, but you do not know everyone. In Popular Music, you know everyone on the course because you are working together constantly and because you share a love for music you instantly click.
The teacher of the course, Mike is incredibly passionate about what he does which resonates with anyone he teaches. He seeks the best opportunities for his students and is always encouraging. I’m 100% sure everyone in my class will agree. I would absolutely recommend this course to anyone who wants to pursue music as a career. This course has provided me with a new level of confidence. I have also made life long friends who are extremely talented and share my love for music."
