Coach Information

Contest Location:

  • We will be hosting District Large Group Speech Contest at Perry High School (1200 18th Street, Perry, Iowa 50220).

Coach Hospitality:

  • PHS would like to serve the coaches a free lunch.
  • Hospitality is in the high school Conference Room 2.
  • No lunch ticket is needed, just sign in.

Schedule:

  • Please let Wendy Bollhoefer know via e-mail if the schedule shows any conflicts.
  • We will be using the automatic scheduler for this contest.
  • We will be posting our schedule on this web page.
  • In order to make a student substitution, you must bring a completed yellow card. Also, please put the student code (example: ACT 207) of the contestant being replaced after the event name. We would appreciate it if you would email us before noon on Friday.
  • Make sure all special requests are sent directly to Craig Ihnen at 515-401-1834 .

Ballots:

  • As you know, this is a critic/judge type of contest. If you desire written comments, the student must hand the room chairperson a comment sheet before each performance and have the top portion filled out.
  • A rating will be still given if there is no comment sheet.
  • The completed comment sheets may be picked up by the school’s coach in the Main Office when the last of the school’s contestants are finished performing and their sections have been posted.
  • If you want comments sheets mailed to you, you must leave a stamped, self-addressed envelope at the office.

Parking:

  • Bus parking is across the street by the football stadium, follow the signs. BUSES WILL NOT PARK IN THE LOTS SURROUNDING THE HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING.
  • Bus driver's lounge is located in the south hall room 312. Coffee and refreshments will be available.
  • Spectator parking will be in lots west and north of the high school.
  • Students may be dropped off in the circle drive in front of the high school. Please tell your students to inform their families where to park.
  • Only the main door will be opened. All other doors will be locked.
  • NO SET, BLOCKS, LADDERS, FURNITURE, STOOLS, BENCHES OR SUCH WILL ENTER THE FRONT DOOR. ENTER FROM THE BACK OF THE SCHOOL AND STORE ITEMS IN THE MIDDLE SCHOOL GYM.

Phone and Internet:

  • A public phone will not be available for student use.
  • Internet will be available to all guests on the day of contest.

Judges:

  • There will be a judges’ meeting in the high school office as soon as you arrive.

Admission:

  • A limited number of programs will be available at the information table for parents and other speech spectators.
  • As per the state office, there will be a suggested donation of $3.00 to watch performances.

Student Behavior:

  • Throughout the day, there will be students located throughout the building to assist with directions, questions, and noise control. Direct questions to them and inform your students of their purpose.
  • Encourage your students to be very careful about noise in the hallways and commons.
  • Please tell your students to behave with decorum at all times.
  • Students may not play radios or CD players unless they use headphones.
  • Our students respect our school facilities, and we expect that of our visitors as well.
  • During the day, coaches are encouraged to help “patrol” the areas where the students are located, including the gym, cafeteria, and hallways.

Ratings:

  • Ratings will be posted in the HIGH SCHOOL GYM as they become available.
  • Please do not ask in the office when a section will be posted. Our office helpers will post rating as quickly as possible.

Middle School Gym:

  • The Middle School Gym, located east of the commons in the fine arts hall, will be open for blocks, ladders, and materials needed for Readers Theater, Choral Reading, and Mime. Watch for signs.
  • Please enter from the back parking lot, behind the school with set for these two areas. Watch for signs.
  • NO FOOD AND DRINK IS ALLOWED IN THE GYM.

High School Gym:

  • The High School Gym, located off the high school commons will be open for students.
  • NO FOOD AND DRINK IS ALLOWED IN THE GYM.

Auditorium:

  • All set pieces must enter the auditorium through side doors on the west side of the auditorium.
  • The loading dock door can not be opened during the day due to cold weather.
  • Watch for signs.
  • PHS students will be available to assist with this.
  • NO SET WILL BE ALLOWED THROUGH THE FRONT DOOR.
  • NO FOOD OR DRINK IS ALLOWED IN THE AUDITORIUM.

High School Commons:

  • The commons area will also be available for students to lounge and eat.
  • Food (pizza, snacks, pop, etc.) will be sold in the commons area. Please encourage your students to support our fundraising efforts by patronizing our speech concessions.
  • FOOD AND DRINK MUST REMAIN IN THE COMMONS AREA. NO FOOD OR POP WILL BE ALLOWED IN THE GYM, HALLWAYS OR PERFORMANCE ROOMS. Please stress this to your students.
  • Our janitorial staff will very much appreciate the clean school left behind by all our visitors if food and drink remain in the commons area during the day. Please let the high school office of any concerns.
