Research Highlight for Atmospheric Electricity:

(1) The coupling process between lower atmosphere and upper atmosphere

The coupling process between lower atmosphere and upper atmosphere is one of the important topics of multidisciplinary geophysical research. Recently, advances in the understanding of transient luminous events, e.g., sprites, gigantic jets and elves in the middle atmosphere, have compelled the atmospheric electricity community to study the effects that they may cause in the lower ionosphere. The middle atmosphere between 50 km and 100 km has always been very difficult to observe and investigate. Progress in the development of rocket and satellite technologies during the past 50 years has made it possible to directly probe the middle atmosphere. Recently, transient luminous events (TLEs) have opened up another window: through observing the discharge phenomena in the middle atmosphere from both the ground and the space, the physical processes in this region can be inferred.

2018 Pei-Yu Chen, Analyzing the Sprite Emission Ratio from FORMOSAT-2 ISUAL Array Photometer DataThe ISUAL (Imager of Sprites and Upper Atmosphere Lightnings) is a scientific payload of FORMOSAT-2 satellite. The ISUAL project not only conducts the survey of the global occurring rate of sprites, but also investigates the optical emissions associated with sprites. In past studies, Adachi et al. (2006, 2008) reported that the sprite emission ratio of N2 2P (Second positive band) to N2 1P (First positive band) obtained from the ISUAL AP (Array Photometer) data can be used to derive the reduced electric field in the peak of streamers of recorded sprites. Adachi et al. (2006, 2008) also found that the reduced electric field is 0.24~1.24 E_k in the upper-diffuse region and 0.81~3.16 E_k in the lower-structured region of sprites. In this work, the sprite emission ratio can be one of the critical parameters to reveal the driving electric field in the plasma chemistry in sprites.


2017 Min-Ruey Lu The development and implement of spectroimager for sprite spectrum

This thesis present the development of spectroscope system for sprites and their observations in our 2015 sprite campaign at the NCU Lulin observatory. The sprite spectroscope system consists of a video recorder for sprite images and a slitless spectroimager for sprite spectrum, respectively. The video recorder is equipped with low-light-level CCD and the 8 mm lens which has a FOV of 43.6°(H) × 33.4°(V). The slitless spectroimager includes a diffraction component (transmit gratting), the 25 mm lens with a FOV of 29.9°(H) × 22.6°(V) and a low-light-level CCD for detector. After the laboratory experiments and calibrations, the sprite spectroscope system meets with the requirements of the sprite observation of TLEs and was successfully installed in the NCU Lulin observatory for our 2015 campaign.


2015 ZHOU,MING-HAN, 科學酬載暉光剖面儀之實作與測試

An Airglow Profile Detector (APD) is designed for a scientific payload onboard a CubeSat mission. The APD scientific goal is to measure the 630 nm and 762 nm airglow emission profiles. The APD specifications are designed as following: volume, < 1U(10×10×10cm^3); power, 0.8 Watts average; field of view, 13°×18° (V×H); sampling rate, 200 Hz. After experimental verification specification in optical laboratory, APD can meet the designed requirements for the scientific payload cube satellites. The APD optical sensor is an array photometer with high sensitivity and high sampling rate for data recording, especially designed for very weak airglow emission. Additionally, the array photometer has 16 channels that can resolve one dimensional spatial resolution for airglow altitude profile. The spatial res-olution of APD airglow observation is about 34 km in the vertical and 775 km in the horizontal. The APD can be used to investigate global distribution of the airglow emissions onboard a CubeSat mission.


2015 Chen, Ying-Xuan, 科學酬載氣暉影像儀模擬設計

The airglow is a luminous phenomenon in the upper atmosphere. The 762nm and 630nm airglow emissions are selected to be designed for the optical payload of CubeSate. First, we simulate the 762nm and 630nm airglow by using the density of charged particles from IRI-2007 and neutral particles from MSISE model in spring of 2010. We can calculate the volume emission rates of 762nm and 630nm emissions, which are estimated for global distribution of airglow brightness in nadir-view and for the satellite measurement of the airglow brightness in limb-view. The calculated brightness of airglow emissions from nadir and limb-view can be used to testify the performance of imager sensor onboard CubeSate.We select the Pi NoIR camera module (Raspberry Pi board) as the imager sensor because of its advantages of low-cost, compact, light-weight and low-power. We testified the performance of spatial resolution, field of view and the responsivity of the camera module. Based on our results of optical experiments, we estimate the imager exposure time of 762nm and 630nm emissions is required at least 150 ms and 1s, respectively. We suggest that the Raspberry Pi camera module can be used to observe airglow in space without considering radiance damage.
