The A.S.T.E.R.I.S.K. – Accelerating Success Through Employment, Responsibility, Inspiration, Skills and Knowledge project is a partnership with various local businesses to provide high school students in the Moreno Valley Unified School District with opportunities to develop job skills and work experience. Each year, Moreno Valley Unified School District will select approximately 150 high school students from all academic and socioeconomic levels to participate in an internship program working for local businesses. This is a five week paid internship program between MVUSD students and businesses in the community. The program includes five weeks of paid employment and four days of professional development workshops.
Moreno Valley Unified School District recognizes that students will be more successful when given the opportunity to work in their community. This approach offers students the challenge of responsibility, learning skills and expanded knowledge of how businesses provide services to the community. The A.S.T.E.R.I.S.K. – Moreno Valley Program is designed to optimize a students’ opportunities for success and responds to the needs voiced by businesses throughout the community. Students are exposed to real-life hands-on workforce experiences.
Businesses will be recruited by the Moreno Valley Unified School District working directly with the A.S.T.E.R.I.S.K. – Moreno Valley Program. A unique curriculum has been designed and implemented that combines four days of specialized instruction (professional development for students) delivered by guest speakers/experts and CTE teachers in their fields with five weeks of on-the-job experience/internships.
The business needs for the community is to have well prepared students who are not only ready to take their place in the workforce, but can meet the demands of a changing workplaces. A.S.T.E.R.I.S.K. – Moreno Valley will work to provide such students. These efforts will promote a competitive, thriving, and successful community at large.
Moreno Valley Unified School District has a good relationship with the businesses in the area through the Adopt-A-School Program. A.S.T.E.R.I.S.K. – Moreno Valley Program will strive to increase these partnerships by leveraging resources to provide a myriad of work-based opportunities for students as well as for businesses.
The goal of A.S.T.E.R.I.S.K. – Moreno Valley is to partner with the community at large, but specifically the business community to enhance the knowledge of its students by:
Meeting academic and technical standards through relevant worksite experience
Exploring careers and prepare for life after school
Preparing for high skill, wage, and/or demand current or emerging professions
Learning about industry requirements
Preparing for entry into post-secondary institutions for further education and training
Developing into responsible, competent and skilled workers, who are dedicated to a quality work ethic
Developing a genuine commitment to the community in which they live
Satisfying the community’s broader workforce needs for highly skilled employees
Becoming contributing members of the community; underscoring the positive impact they will have on the success of the community
