The Annual International Conference on Environmental Science (ACES) is an international event organized by the Philippine Environmental Science Association (PESA) in collaboration with member institutions. Members of PESA are academic institutions that offer Environmental Science courses and that are actively engaged in researches on environmental science.
The 11th ACES is hosted by the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) and co-organized by the Institute of Environmental Science & Meteorology. The conference will be held at the MSU-IIT campus in Iligan City, Philippines on November 8-10, 2023. This year's conference theme is “Environmental Justice and Peace: Environmental Science as a Catalyst for Change and Innovations.”
The protection of our environment heavily relies on the actions and initiatives of the people who inhabit it. The 11th Annual International Conference on Environmental Sciences (ACES 2023) this year serves as an important platform for in-depth discussions on environmental concerns, sharing best practices, and exploring research to promote the conservation and sustainable future of our planet.
We, at Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), are delighted to have the opportunity to host ACES 2023 in collaboration with the Philippine Environmental Science Association, the Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology at the College of Science, University of the Philippines Diliman, and the Association of IIT Alumni Foundation Inc. Our goal is to create an inclusive platform that encourages the exchange of ideas in a way that is accessible to everyone, ensuring that the conversation is engaging and reflects our shared humanity.
ACES 2023 brings together scholars, scientists, researchers, and students from across the country, all united by a common purpose: addressing the most pressing environmental challenges of our time and sharing groundbreaking ideas and research in the field of environmental science.
As we collectively navigate the complex landscape of environmental science, our commitment to clarity and formality in discourse mirrors our respect for this critical field of study.
I hope that through this conference, we can raise greater awareness for environmental studies and innovations. They are equally important as economic, cultural, and technological development, and they deserve a rightful place in the academic planning of universities and educational institutions.
May this conference be an opportunity as well for participants to build connections and create a community of researchers and educators dedicated to advancing teaching and research on environmental science.

The Philippine Environmental Science Association (PESA) is a consortium of different higher education institutions originally composed of the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD), University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), and De La Salle University (DLSU). PESA was organized to strengthen the value of environmental science as an interdisciplinary field in analyzing and providing solutions to perennial environmental problems of the country. This is in response to the need for a proactive stance to continuously upgrade and advance the level of environmental science research and action to address the various environmental problems affecting the country.
One of the activities to achieve PESA’s goals is the conduct of the Annual Conference on Environmental Science. The annual conference provides opportunities for research updates and discussions on key environmental agenda that include climate change, environmental impact assessment protocols, biodiversity and conservation, environment-resources-population dynamics, disaster risk management, and best practices and green solutions, among many others. The annual meetings gather members of the academe, industry, students, research institutions, government agencies, and private organizations for a two-day meeting for an active exchange of ideas.
The Institute of Environmental Science & Meteorology (IESM) is an academic unit of the College of Science in UP Diliman. Merging the erstwhile Environmental Science Program (ESP) and the Department of Meteorology and Oceanography (DMO), the institute is envisioned to serve as a center of excellence in the environmental and atmospheric sciences in Asia Pacific; investigating natural phenomena contributing to many major decisions toward sustainable development in the country and the region.
IESM aims to contribute towards the advancement of the science of human impact and responses of the changing environment, and to understand and forecast weather systems and climate, reduce and manage atmospheric and hydro-meteorological hazards. In the past 19 years, IESM has grown much stronger with a total of 9 full time faculty members, 4 professorial lecturers and 1 professorial fellow, all with PhD degrees. After moving into its new home in 2014, research in IESM has increased significantly.
Recently, IESM has been designated as the Center of Excellence for Environmental Science by the Commission on Higher Education. Furthermore, IESM is the Regional Training Center for the World Meteorological Organization Region V.
