The Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) awards a total of seven MSU-IIT programs as Centers of Excellence (COE) and 11 others as Centers of Development (COD). The total of COEs and CODs makes IIT the record holder of most number of COEs and CODs in Mindanao.

MSU-IIT consistently makes it as top performing school in various licensure exams conducted by the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC).

The Civil Service Commission (CSC) awarded MSU-IIT the Bronze Award for human resource management excellence.
MSU-IIT was among 106 government agencies given the award at the Philippine International Convention Center on July 24, 2019 during the first day of the 2019 Public Sector HR Symposium.

MSU-IIT's degree programs in CASS, CED, CBAA, CON, and CCS are accredited by the Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities n the Philippines (AACCUP). The Institute recently underwent AACCUP survey in October last year.

MSU-IIT’s vehicle-free campus every first Wednesday of the month program debuted to great acclaim on February 5 with students, alumni, and the online community praising the Institute for implementing the environmental initiative.

MSU-IIT's College of Education was awarded Exemplary Passing Performance for Elementary Level by the Professional Regulatory Commission during the 36th Oath-taking Ceremonies of Professional Teachers on February 2, 2020.

MSU-IIT expanded its three-story graduate dormitory, increasing its number of rooms from 41 to 83, effectively allowing it to accommodate around 160 postgraduate students.

On October 27, 2019, MSU-IIT and the Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), Malaysia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to formalize the partnership between the two universities.

Sita: The Ramayana Revisited premiered at the 2015 Asia-Pacific Bond of Drama Schools in La Salle College of the Arts in Singapore. Since then, this Philippine version of Asia’s most widespread epic from Sanskrit origins has performed to acclaim to large audiences in Bangkok, New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Iligan, and now Ayodha in Uttar Pradesh. Ayodha is King Rama’s royal enclave where he built his palace.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) awarded MSU-IIT as the regional winner in the 2015 National Search for Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Schools.
The Institute was also awarded the “Energy Leadership Award” by the Meralco Foundation.

The pioneering Culture and Arts Studies Center (CulArtS-C), proudly announcing the Southern Philippines’ leadership in Cultural Studies, was established at MSU-IIT.

The MSU-IIT College of Nursing (CON) ranked fifth among top performing schools of Nursing in the Philippines in the Nurse Licensure Examination (NLE) given by the Board of Nursing through the Professional Regulation Commission on November 25-26, 2016, with Jubelle May A. Sipalay, a cum laude graduate from the CON Batch Ange de Chevet 2016 who took 7th place with an 85.20% rating.

IN ORDER to sustain its gains and to position itself to make that jump into the future, the Institute implemented in 2019 a revised organizational structure that was envisioned to improve efficiency and increase productivity.
Under this reorganization, the Institute aimed to address new and expanding services and functions; regroup related functions for better supervision; decongest certain offices; improve flow of communications; and achieve uniformity in naming of offices.

The College of Engineering (COE) celebrated another milestone as it inaugurated and dedicated its new expansion building on November 20, 2014.

MSU-IIT inaugurated its 20M-Peso building that is dedicated to the professional management of the movement of technology generated inside the Institute through its research and innovation activities to its partners in industry.
The KTTO building helps MSU-IIT become a true hub for knowledge and technology transfer in Mindanao as it can now better facilitate the transfer and commercialization of intellectual properties (IPs) through strategic IP management and industry engagements in order to benefit society and promote economic development.

In what can only be described as a big step towards MSU-IIT’s goal of becoming a research university, the Institute inaugurated on December 2, 2016 its Premier Research Institute of Science and Mathematics (PRISM) building.
PRISM houses IIT’s state-of-the-art research laboratories and equipment, and is looked upon to provide inspiring new spaces for Institute faculty researchers to work in

Discovery, Research, and Innovation

PROMPTED by the current public health emergency and the limited capacities of Iligan’s hospitals and laboratories, MSU-IIT’s scientists, engineers, researchers, makers and innovators banded together to support the local government of Iligan in the fight against Covid-19 in the city.
By utilizing the available expertise in innovation and in science and technology, as well as taking advantage of the Institute’s facilities, the MSU-IIT innovators and research teams composed of its faculty and staff members, and its Covid-19 Task Force, have been producing disinfectants and fabricating face shields and DIY intubation protective gears for use by medical personnel and frontliners.

Southeast Asia’s top pharmaceutical company Unilab, Inc. forged an agreement with MSU-IIT in 2019 for joint undertakings on the research and development of nutraceuticals and dietary products.

MSU-IIT’s FAB LAB Mindanao was presented at the 11th Geneva Forum-4th Annual International Conference on Participatory Research, Citizen Sciences, Crowd-Innovation and Fab Labs for Peace and Development in Geneva, Switzerland.
During the presentation, the Institute’s Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension, Dr. Jinky B. Bornales, who represented MSU-IIT in the said forum, emphasized the collaborative efforts that the Institute has been engaged for the past 3 years in implementing FAB LAB Mindanao as an essential resource for innovation in Southern Philippines.

In 2015, after two expeditions at the Layawan River in Mt. Malindang Natural Park, Leocris S. Batucan Jr., CSM graduate student, added six novel species to the mayfly specie.
Given such privilege of discovery, he named them accordingly: Afronurus ayayti sp. nov. (from IIT), Atopopus pisay sp. nov.(from Philippine Science High School or PiSci, Batucan’s high school alma mater) , Afronurus albentis sp. no.v, sparsorythus buntawensis sp. nov., Dudgeodes subanen sp. nov. (from Subanen), and Chroterpes striatafemoris sp. nov.
With Batucan’s contribution, there are now 13 known mayfly species from Mindanao.

In 2012, MSU-IIT was selected to host the country’s first central research program to find natural substances to cure illnesses.
The Institute in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD) opened the first “Tuklas Lunas Center,” the facility to harness indigenous natural substances for medicine.

Launched in 2013, the Ceramic Water Filter named HYDRIA by its inventors, Professor Ephraim Ibarra and his former students, Jimbert Roda and Sergio Talaroc., is a cheaper alternative to expensive and imported water filters.
It is in terracotta red because it is from the red clay available in Lanao del Norte and can be reused many times after cleaning. Only clean filtered water with its oxygen and unchanged mineral content drips into the water holding tank or clay jar, giving the water a fresh and wholesome taste.

MSU-IIT conducted its First Innovation and Technology Fair dubbed Technnovation 2014 at the Institute Mini-theater on September 25-26, 2014.
Technnovation 2014 showcased science, technology and engineering R & D results, developed technologies, innovations and inventions of Institute graduate and undergraduate students with their faculty advisers.

In preserving and developing the sociocultural and ecological integrity of Lake Lanao, the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) approved in 2015 three projects for funding on the study of Lake Lanao for the Mindanao State University System. One of these projects is headed by Chancellor Dr. Sukarno D. Tanggol.

DOST-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD) granted 25.5 million pesos to the program “µC-IC: Design of Microcontroller Integrated with Energy Harvesting and Power Management.
The program headed by Prof. Jefferson Hora (also the project 1 leader) has three (3) projects - microcontroller unit (project 1); power management unit (project 2); and energy harvesting unit (project 3).
Prof. Allenn Lowaton and Prof. Chinet Mocorro – Overstreet are the project 2 and project 3 leaders, respectively.

MSU-IIT knowledge and Technology Transfer Office – Innovation and Technology Support Office (KTTO-ITSO) launched the functional food supplement in 2017.
This is the 1^st MSU-IIT technology brought to market.
The prebiotic -fructooligosaccharide (FOS) element of such supplement is a collaborative product research of Dr. Roberto M. Malaluan, faculty of the Chemical Engineering Technology department of COET, and Nutratech Biopharma Inc. The research is funded by USAID-Science Technology Research and Innovation Development (STRIDE).

Community Engagements

MSU-IIT and NGOs converged in community-driven lake conservation initiative, the My Lake Lanao Project (MLLP), which culminated in a summit attended by more than eighty environmental activists, academic researchers, NGO leaders, local government officials, community leaders, and students on February 2-3, 2017.

To give the internally displaced children new experiences to overshadow their ordeal from the Marawi siege, the MSU-IIT College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) Evacuation Center conducted on July 19, 2017 its second “Peace-Ta!”, an activity for the children that includes storytelling at the CASS student lounge and a tour at the Institute’s Natural Science Museum, College of Science and Mathematics.

AS PART of its commitment to a just and sustainable peace and development, the MSU-IIT’s Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao (IPDM) spearheaded a whole day orientation and workshop in support to the established Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) on August 20, 2019.
This activity was the first of the planned 3-phase project initiated by the IPDM in order to sustain the Institute’s peace efforts through instruction, research, extension, and production. The project is among the identified priority areas towards mainstreaming the Institute’s extension services with IPDM as the leading unit to work on these efforts in coordination and collaboration with the academic and semi-academic units of the Institute.

In response to the need to counter images of war and the narratives of violence as repercussions of the Marawi siege, efforts are being undertaken to ensure that a culture of peace is cultivated, especially in the hearts of the children of Marawi.
To pursue this goal, a unique educational exercise was given in September via a training-workshop that would enable the teachers of Marawi children to combine peace education with the teaching of reading.

MSU-IIT aids Sendong survivors who were housed at the Institute gymnasium, which served as one of the city's evacuation centers in 2012.

The College of Nursing (CON) fed, weighed and provided entertainment to about 70 children during its Nutrition Program Extension Project at the MSU-IIT’s adopted barangay Tibanga on July 31, 2013 at the said barangay’s multipurpose hall.

The Alternative Learning System (ALS) extension program of the Institute dubbed School by the Sea for Bajaus was launched on May 13, 2011 and has wider support from the local and international communities.
The Department of Sociology, College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) and the College of Education ( CEd) have sustained the program and continues to make its presence felt in the Badjau community by bringing new partners from within and outside the Institute.
Its main aim is to provide alternative education to the Bajau youth living in Purok 4, Tambacan, Iligan City.

The College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) has been running the program “Sagip-Aral”. It is the brainchild of Atty. Felicidad C. Gadiano, faculty of the CASS Political Science Department.Each year, the CASS with the help and support of various individuals and organizations organizes two major gift giving events for the beneficiaries of Sagip Aral. During each start of a school year, CASS gives out school supplies to more than 100 student-beneficiaries from Barangay Santiago and every Christmas, CASS gifts the student-beneficiaries and their families with food items for their noche Buena.

Partnerships and Collaborations

In 2017, MSU-IIT signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Center for Global Initiatives of Osaka University, Japan. The MOU signaled a new commitment by both institutions for research collaboration, faculty and student exchange, and other international cooperation.

Supported by The Toyota Foundation, the first mobile museum, The Mobile Museum Boxes toured at MSU-IIT on January 18, 2016. The Mobile Museum Boxes was a collaborative project of the Institute, the National Museum of the Philippines, and The University of Tokyo’s university museum.

Prof. Dr. Ludwig Paul Ary Evert Streit, a world-renowned expert in Infinite Dimensional and Stochastic Analysis, came to MSU-IIT as Visiting Professor and conducted a course lecture entitled “An Introduction to Infinite Dimensional and Stochastic Analysis” to the graduate students of the Department of Mathematics & Statistics (DMS) on November 2017.

MSU-IIT signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOU) with the University of Malaya (UM) in Malaysia and a Memorandum of Agreement with the Faculty of Business of Khon Kaen University (KKU) in Thailand last year. In 2013, the Institute signed first an MOU with KKU’s Faculty of Education.

In 2016, MSU-IIT’s Department of Biological Sciences partnered with National Taiwan Normal University’s (LS-NTNU) Department of Life Science to establish academic linkages between the parties.
The Memorandum of Understanding was signed at MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology by the MSU-IIT’s Department of Biological Sciences Chair Prof. Christine Cherry E. Solon and the LS-NTNU’s Department of Life Science Chair Prof. Ching-Ting Chien.

MSU-IIT and its institutional partners brainstormed and shared ideas on how to optimally collaborate through innovation initiatives to achieve significant impact in Mindanao during a brief meeting which was held at the Institute’s Fabrication Laboratory (FABLAB) Mindanao on the afternoon of September 13, 2019.
The meeting was attended by the Institute’s Chancellor Sukarno D. Tanggol, Prof. Evelyn Creencia, Director for Research, and Assoc. Prof. Lemuel Clark Velasco, FAB LAB Manager, together with MSU-IIT’s partner institutions: Department of Science and Technology-Region 10; Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Region 10; CHED-Region 10, DTI-Lanao del Norte; DTI FAB LAB, and the US Embassy.

CON partnered with Iligan City Health Office and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology for Sagip-Piitan Health Initiative in 2014.

The City Government of Iligan and the MSU-IIT entered into a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) in 2014 to cooperate on various areas to further realize the City Development Plan.
The MOA identified significant areas that could help the City government launch new projects and/or enhance implemented projects by turning to the expertise of the Institute’s faculty and extension workers.

Turkey’s Kastamonu University faculty visit IIT in 2017.
The visit marks another step for MSU-IIT in the realization of its vision of becoming a Research University as it entails potential research collaboration and academic exchange projects with the Kastamonu University.

In October 11, 2018, Chancellor Sukarno Tanggol signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with one of Asia’s top university, Kyoto University in Japan, particularly the famed Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS), represented by its Director, Professor Hayami Yoko.
The MOU stipulates the promotion of academic exchange and partnership between the two institutions through programs of joint research, conferences, publications, the sharing of library and research resources, and the exchange of faculty. The signing took place at the Administrative Building of CSEAS in Kyoto City, Japan.

MSU-IIT signed a MOA with DTI and DOST to upgrade Mindanao’s first FAB LAB in 2018.
In 2017, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) granted a 1.2-Million institutional support for FAB LAB Mindanao through the provision of additional equipment that will assist the region’s science and technology researchers.
In 2016, the Institute and DTI signed the first MOA for the 7-Million initial equipment of FAB LAB Mindanao all with the purpose of creating a technology access center and training provider on digital fabrication for MSMEs.

Junnel E. Cagampang and Gelmar A. Coniendo, BS in Industrial Automation and Mechatronics graduates of the Department of Industrial Automation and Control Engineering Technology (IACET) with Professor Cesar S. Gabo as coach won the bronze medal in Mechatronics in the 11th ASEAN Skills Competition (ASC) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on October 26-29, 2016.

The MSU-IIT's Kalilang Ensemble was featured in the documentary film celebrating Alab Panitikan (National Literature Month) produced by the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA) and Living Asia Channel (LAC) in 2016.

The Metrobank Foundation awarded MSU-IIT in 2016 for producing Dr. Mark Anthony J. Torres, one of the winners of its 2016 Search for Outstanding Teachers (SOT) for the higher education competition category.

Philippine microelectronics competition champion and fifth year MSU-IIT electronics engineering student Robert Tac-an Nericua competed in the 11th International Microelectronics Olympiad of Armenia.

Six MSU-IIT students made it to the Top 10 in the October 2019 Chemical Technician Board Exam.
In the same year, MSU-IIT grabbed the top spot in the Metallurgical Engineer Licensure Exam with Earl Dave M. Tulabing scoring 86.15 percent.Taking second spot was another MSU-IIT examinee Dexter R. Madjos who scored 83.25 percent. There were three other MSU-IIT examinees who also made it to the top 10.

Biology students received the most number of awards during the 25th Philippine Biodiversity Symposium of the Biodiversity Conservation Society of the Philippines (formerly known as Wildlife Conservation Society of the Philippines) held on April 5-9, 2016 at the Filipiniana Hotel in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro.

MSU-IIT Dragons (Layang-Layang) and MSU-IIT Dagitab Dragons (Tarintik P-BE) – the two teams from MSU-IIT competed in the 2016 Shell Eco Marathon Asia (SEMA) held at the Quirino Grandstand, Manila on March 3-6, 2016.

Sociology Professor Arnold P. Alamon launched his two books on August 16, 2017, in MSU-IIT: Wars of Extinction: Discrimination and the Lumad Struggle in Mindanao and Nations in Our Hearts: Essays on Mindanao.

The second edition of Chancellor Sukarno D. Tanggol’s book on federalism, Regional Autonomy and Federalism in the Philippines, was released by its publisher, the MSU-IIT Office of Public Information (OPI).

Jay Arniel A. Gajudo from the Department of Computer Applications of the College of Computer Studies and FAB LAB Mindanao Internal Operations Manager, Dexter Ken P. Lopera were awarded by the Mayor of the Metropolitan Government of Seoul the Bronze Award during the 5th annual FAB LAB Asia Network (FAN5) Conference on May 2019 in Seoul Innovation Center, South Korea.

Asst. Prof. Noel Lito B. Sayson, a faculty member of the Department of Physics of the College of Science and Mathematics published a paper entitled Octave-spanning tuneable parametric oscillation in crystalline Kerr micro resonators in the prestigious peer-reviewed scientific journal, Nature Photonics.

Joshua B. Zoleta,of the Department of the Materials Engineering and Technology, COET bagged five awards within a span of five months in 2018.

Kalilas, a newly established student organization of film-enthusiasts in MSU-IIT, bagged awards in the Cinemagis XI - Digital Short Film Festival in Northern Mindanao on January 26, 2019 at Xavier University, in Cagayan de Oro City for their film “Anggulo”.

Faculty member of the Department of History and Campus Secretary Dr. Jamail A. Kamlian was recognized for his contribution as co-author in the book Out of the Shadows: Violent, Conflict and the Real Economy of Mindanao.
The book was hailed Best Book in the Social Sciences by the National Book Development Board and the Manila Critics Circle during the 36^th National Book Awards on December 2, 2017, at the National Museum in Manila.

In 2013, Chancellor Dr. Sukarno D. Tanggol was awarded the UP Alumni Association (UPAA) Distinguished Award in Peace and Social Cohesion.
Tanggol was given the award in recognition for his “leadership achievements and contributions” that especially benefited the general community.
