Frequently Asked Questions

These questions were taken from the survey students completed the first week of school, as well as the post-it notes left on the board. If you have more questions, please email me at a.s.almeida@g.maranausd.org

How do I pronounce your name?

Al-may-da. You can also call me Ms. A if that's easier.

What materials do we need for this class?

You'll just need your Chromebook and something to write with. It would also be helpful to have lined paper, but you don't need a formal notebook.

How many essays do we have?

We will write every week.  A lot of the time, you'll be asked to write just a paragraph with evidence to support a prompt. Students in American Literature will write an extended research paper and a few timed writes with various prompts. Freshmen will have a research paper, a character essay, and a couple of timed writes.

When do we have big projects?

At the end of every unit, you will have a performance task. This is a project or test where you'll demonstrate your ability to master the skills of that unit. Juniors have 5 units. Freshmen have 6.

Is this class hard?

Many students have told me that this class has a lot of work, but that it is not hard because of the amount of help they can receive. All writing is done in class so that you can get 1x1 help from Ms. Almeida while you write.

How do you feel about us coming into your Summit?

Please come to my Summit as often as you would like to get help! To come to my Summit, please email me to let me know the name of your Summit teacher and the day you'd like to come in so that I can create a Smart Pass for you. Summit is a fantastic opportunity to get 1x1 help on assignments.

What if I get sick or am absent for an extended period of time?

If you are sick, you can have extra time for assignments. I suggest asking for a pass to come to my Summit to catch up when you return.

Do we have to present in this class?

Both American Literature and English 1-2 include presenting. American Literature students will have to present a speech and participate in a class debate. English 1-2 students will complete a group presentation and participate in a Socratic Seminar.

Will we do poster projects?

Yes! You will do small poster projects to convey your ideas in a visual and artistic manner.

How do you feel about late work due to family emergencies?

Please email me at any time to let me know if you need more time or extensions on projects or assignments.

Can I finish work at home if I need more time?

Yes! You can finish assignments at home or during Summit if you do not finish them in class.

What is the headphone policy?

When we are doing independent work, you may listen to your own music. I ask that while someone is presenting or during group work you keep your phone and headphones away to give your full attention to whoever is speaking.

How often is group work?

A lot of assignments will be independent, but we will have many group conversations. You will work with your group at least once a week on either a table discussion or a small project/assignment/task.

Can I stay after school for help?

I am often in my classroom by 7:00 in the morning. I usually stay after school until about 3:40. Let me know if you ever need to come in for more time!
