Rus Hitchcock (2nd from left) coached at Nikiski/Middle High school from 2002-2017. Also, for many years before and during that time, he worked with kids in our community through Nikiski Youth Basketball and The Boys & Girls Club of Kenai. He was also a constant presence in both Nikiski and Kenai City League basketball, whether it be playing, officiating, or just offering encouragement and advice, Rus was an avid basketball presence in our community… also known as a true gym rat, as he loved to say! J
Sadly, Rus passed away on October 26, 2017. In his time with us he showed us a love that is rare and special. He truly lived a life that constantly gave to others. Rus had a special way of making you believe that whatever you were doing was important, that you could do it well and do it better, and he would eagerly dive right in to help you. What an awesome trait for a coach, co-worker, dad and husband to have!
It is in honor of who Rus was and what he gave to us that beginning in 2018, our tournament will become:
The Rus Hitchcock Nikiski Tip-Off Tournament.
Rus, thank you for all that you gave, who you were, and what you have left us. You will always continue motivating us to work hard for each other. Now, let’s go play some hoop!
