FIELD TRIPS AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS

Come visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center for a fun and engaging learning experience! We are currently booking field trips for the Spring 2023 school semester. The AWCC hosts hundreds of school children in the fall and spring from all over the State of Alaska. Our naturalist staff provides educational programming that captivates students with exciting facts and information about Alaska’s wildlife. Program descriptions are available on our website at https://alaskawildlife.org/education/field-trips-presentations/.

Can’t make it to AWCC in person? Join us for a virtual field trip. Our naturalist staff provides educational opportunities for students near and far. During a virtual field trip, students will be engaged by a walking tour of AWCC or a show and tell with one of our animal ambassadors. Students will learn new information about Alaskan wildlife and have an opportunity to ask our naturalist staff their questions in real time. Learn more about virtual field trip opportunities here https://alaskawildlife.org/visit/visit-awcc-virtually/.

Let the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center come to you! The AWCC education staff can visit your school or organization. Find information about the outreach programs that can travel to you on our website at https://alaskawildlife.org/education/outreach/.

Grant funds for learning experiences with Exxon Valdez oil spill region youth!

The request-for-proposals can be found here: https://www.pwsrcac.org/announcements/funds-available-for-educational-projects/

The deadline for proposals is November 18, 2022.

Contact PWSRCAC outreach coordinator Maia Draper-Reich with any questions at maia.draper-reich@pwsrcac.org

The Prince William Sound Regional Citizens’ Advisory Council (PWSRCAC) is inviting proposals for facilitating learning experiences with Exxon Valdez oil spill region youth. Youth in this case can include students from K-12 formal education, homeschool students, informal education programs, and either formal or informal college-level education. In the past, the PWSRCAC has also sponsored projects for teachers that benefit area youth.

Projects should result in better understanding of such topics as: citizens’ oversight, environmental impacts of the operation of the Alyeska Pipeline Service Company oil terminal in Valdez and the oil tankers that call there, oil spill prevention and response planning and operation, and/or other topics related to the Council’s mission.

Past and ongoing projects have included:

·         Youth stewardship expeditions into the marine environment via sea kayak and other vessels

·         Youth monitoring for aquatic invasive species

·         Public oil spill science discovery labs

·         Oil spill science and technology outreach

·         Oil spill education website development

·         K-12 oil spill curriculum writing and testing

·         Travel funding for youth presenting oil spill projects at conferences

·         Oral history projects related to the Exxon Valdez oil spill

·         Other marine stewardship programs for students with an oil spill connection

Working with area youth is vital to fight complacency through educating new generations of citizens on the need for ongoing oil spill prevention.
