AI is a potentially powerful tool that can increase efficiency in the teaching profession and improve student outcomes. The tool is only as good as what we do with it, and humans designing the use of AI is what makes it powerful. It must be utilized ethically, supported with training, and aligned with our district’s strategic plan and core values of community, integrity, perseverance, and academic excellence. Feedback from educators, students, and families will guide ongoing AI integration to ensure it meets the needs of all learners, including those who may face greater challenges in accessing educational opportunities. Oversight, monitoring, and continual assessment are required for the greatest impact, with clear metrics in place to measure success and effectiveness.
To ensure adherence to the guiding principles, the intial integration of AI in KPBSD classrooms has oversight through a cross-department AI Advisory Team.
Guiding Principles - The KPBSD commits to the use of AI in ways that are:
Safe & Secure: AI must not compromise data privacy or student safety.
Educationally Aligned: AI must support learning, growth, and well-being—not just efficiency.
Human-Centered: AI should enhance—not replace—the judgment, creativity, and empathy of educators and learners.
Transparent: Students, families, and staff should know when and how AI is being used.
*Educators choosing to integrate the use of AI into their classroom practices are required to complete mandatory training.
AI APPROVAL PROCESS: AI tools use by students in KPBSD go through an audit by the Information Servies Department and are FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) and COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) compliant.
