The Aleuts, who called themselves the Unangax, lived on the Aleutian Islands and southern Alaska Peninsula. They received most of their resources from the sea which surrounded them. Much of their subsistence depended on marine mammals such as whales, seals, sea lions, sea otters, and other marine resources such as salmon, halibut, shellfish, and kelp. Resources from the sea provided their food and most of the things they needed to survive, such as materials for clothes, boats, tools, shelters, and fuel to heat their homes. At the time of the Russian discovery of Alaska in the 18th century, the Aleuts had the densest population in Alaska, with over 15,000 people living on the Aleutian islands.
