However, the North American plate is not just one uniform block of land; it is made up of different regions of similar rock types and a shared history. These regions are often connected and move together within the larger plate (you could think of them as mini-plates). Alaska has four of these major geological divisions, each of which are the northern and western terminus of larger North American geologic regions.
