Literacy Units



Elementary School Literature Sets

Traditional Foods: Literacy Unit for 3-4th grade

Complete standards-aligned literacy unit focusing on tradional Alaskan foods.  Kit also includes 30 students copies of "Mary's Wild Winter Feast."  

Harry Okpik Book Set - 3rd Grade

Class set of 25 student books and a NEW complete standards-aligned teacher's guide/unit of study, combining literature and sled dog science for 3rd grade students.  Also included are classroom manipulatives, Lego Dog Musher and sled, etc.    

Little Whale: A Story of the Last Tlingit War Canoe - 3/4th 

Classroom set of 30 books including a book study. This chapter book for young readers (3rd-4th) retells the story of Roy Peratrovich's grandfather and his voyage on a Tlingit war canoe when he was young.  

Iqsani's Trout Hook - Alutiiq Fish Camp Story 

3rd-4th Grade

Classroom set of 25 books, including a standards-based Literacy Unit.  Accompanying the fish camp story are pictures and documentation of real excavations on Kodiak Island. 

Uswitusqaq's Dream - 4-6th

Classroom set of 30 books including a book study. This chapter book for intermediate readers (4-6th) follows Alutiiq youth on a journey where they discover a hidden bay of sea otters.  Alutiiq culture and history are expertly woven into this novel.  




Middle and High School Literature Sets

Native Americans in History - 5-8th

Set of 30 student books.  Learn about Indigenous heroes throughout history.  A great companion to any middle school history class.  Each section ends with questions that can be used for comprehension and extension.  Also includes supplemental Indigenous hero lessons,

My Name Is Not Easy - Mid/High School

Classroom set of 30 books including a complete teacher's guide/unit of study. This middle/high school novel tells the story of residential boarding schools in Alaska/Canada.  

Fighter in Velvet Gloves: Elizabeth Peratrovich Kit - Mid/High School

Code Talker - High School

Classroom set of 30 books including a complete standards-aligned teacher's guide/unit of study. This high school novel tells the story of the Navajo Marines who use their Indigenous language as code, sending crucial messages back and forth in WWII.  

The War Canoe - High School 

Classroom set of 30 books including a complete standards-aligned teacher's guide/unit of study. This high school novel capture both authentic Native traditions and beliefs and the flavor of contemporary Alaska.  Follow Mickey Church, a Tlingit teen from Wrangell, AK, as he secretly builds a war canoe, and learns the history of his hometown.

Forage Unit 

Developed by the Anchorage Museum, this unit combines the Dena'ina Plant Identification Cards/Deck with a unit on foraging in Alaska.  Teacher guide and student booklet masters are included.

Gathering Plants We Eat

Developed by Chugachmiut, these field cards show Sugpiag/Alutiiq names and uses for plants. This set includes two laminated field card sets, the books "Tanaina Plantlore," and "Alaska's Wild Plants," as well as 15 copies of "Alaska Wild Foods."

Unigkuat - Alutiiq Legends

This book shares 62 traditional tales from the Kodiak Archipelago, compiled from stories told by Alutiiq Elders over the past 150 years.  In each legend, readers learn about Alutiiq world.  This is a single book, not a classroom set.  

Dena'ina: Nat'uh  

Perfect for Middle and High school (even upper elementary)  this easy to understand history of the Dena'ina people of the Cook Inlet region includes quotes from elders, timelines, and local history.  30 student copies,1 teacher guide included, and laminated "timeline" is included.
