Surprisingly, for its small population, Anchorage is the third largest airport worldwide by cargo volume. Its location as a midpoint between U.S. and East Asian air routes makes it ideal for refueling, changing crews, and maintenance. In 2021, over half of all cargo flown between Asia and North America transited through Anchorage.Â
Air cargo companies bring money into the state by paying airport fees, purchasing fuel and services, and hiring employees. In 2021, Ted Stevens International Airport created 20,000 jobs and $1.2 billion in job earnings. About one in seven jobs in Anchorage are directly or indirectly related to the airport.
