Athabaskans are linguistically related to other Na-Dene peoples, including the Tlingit of Southeast Alaska, the Eyak of the Copper River Delta, and the Navajo and Apaches of the American Southwest. Athabaskan people call themselves 'Dena' or 'the people.'
Inside Alaska, there are 11 distinct Athabaskan groups based on language dialects. These are the Ahtna, Han, Holikachuk, Ingalik, Koyukon, Kutchin, Tanacross, Tanaina, Tanana, Upper Kuskokwim, and Upper Tanana. Each group had its own well-defined territory.
