Students must complete 1 credit of Physical Education 1 OR JROTC to graduate with a South Carolina diploma. These courses will include a state-required comprehensive health component.
Physical Education 1

Physical Education 1 is a foundational course designed for South Carolina high school students to promote lifelong fitness, wellness, and physical activity. This course emphasizes the development of motor skills, movement concepts, and physical fitness through participation in a variety of individual and team activities. Students will learn about the benefits of regular exercise, healthy lifestyle choices, and personal responsibility for wellness. The curriculum aligns with South Carolina state standards and encourages cooperation, sportsmanship, and goal setting to enhance overall physical, mental, and social well-being. PE 1 is a required course to receive a high school diploma
Physical Education 1- Dance focus
Credit: 1 credit
This course will provide a wide array of topics related to health, physical fitness and how to establish a high quality life-style. Students will be involved in a wide range of fitness activities, learn how to assess their own health and fitness levels, and participate in a variety of team sports and lifetime activities in addition to dance techniques and styles. PE 1 is a required course to receive a high school diploma. All five standards set up by the state of South Carolina must be passed in order to receive credit for the course.
Physical Education 2: Weight Training
Prerequisite: Physical Education 1
Credit: 1 credit
This elective course is designed for student athletes who want to improve their personal fitness. Physical training (weight training and conditioning) is the focus of the class with emphasis on proper development of weight training techniques and improving the students’ physical fitness. (This course can be repeated as space allows, however; only the first credit earned will be counted towards total credits earned.)
Physical Education 3: Intermediate Weight Training 1
Prerequisite: Physical Education 1
Credit: 1 credit Physical Education 3 is an intermediate weight training course.
This course will consist of learning about how weight training can positively impact your health. This course will cover the fundamentals of power lifting. Lifts can include, bench press, squat, hang clean and deadlifts. We will learn the mechanics behind each lift. Conditioning and dynamic movements will be incorporated in the course.
Physical Education 4: Intermediate Weight Training 2
Prerequisite: Physical Education 3
Credit: 1 credit
Intermediate weight training 2 is a continuation of the progress made in PE 3 Intermediate Weight Training 1. Students will continue to develop healthy life skills and demonstrate progression in technique and fitness as measured in PE 3 Intermediate Weight Training. This course will consist of all power and Olympic lifts as well as upper-level conditioning and speed training. This class is very fast paced and is designed for athletes in mind.
Physical Education 5: Advanced Weight Training 1
Prerequisite: Physical Education 4
Credit: 1 credit
Physical Education 5 is an advanced weight training course. This course will stress mastering the fundamental skills of weight training. It is designed to build upon student knowledge of weight training techniques, plyometrics, and improving students’ physical fitness. Students will demonstrate progression in technique and fitness as a measured in prerequisite course.
Physical Education 6: Advanced Weight Training 2
Prerequisite: Physical Education 5
Credit: 1 credit
This course will stress mastering the fundamental skills of weight training. It is designed to build upon student knowledge of weight training techniques, plyometrics, and improving students’ physical fitness. Students will demonstrate progression in technique and fitness as measured in prerequisite course.
Team and Life Sports
Prerequisite: Physical Education 1
Credit: 1 credit
This elective course is designed for students who enjoy being active and would like to continue participating in PE class. Students will participate in team and individual or partner sports in a recreational setting. This course will focus on game strategy through sport enjoyment. Sports such as volleyball, disc golf, soccer, basketball, ultimate frisbee, badminton, spike ball, flag football, and more are included. This course may not be used in lieu of PE 1 to satisfy the graduation requirement. (This course can be repeated as space allows, however; only the first credit earned will be counted towards total credits earned).
Competitive Team Sports
Prerequisites: Physical Education 1

This elective course is designed for self-motivated students who want to improve their overall fitness. Students will design and implement personal exercise plans to include weightlifting and cardio-respiratory activities. Students will learn content, including muscle anatomy, exercise physiology, and the relationship between diet and exercise, that will help guide them toward lifelong health. Students with an interest in personal training would benefit from this class. Students are expected to dress and work out every day in class, no exceptions. Students will be required to apply prior fitness knowledge from PE I. This course may not be used in lieu of PE 1 to satisfy the graduation requirement. (This course can be repeated as space allows; however, only the first credit earned will be counted towards total credits earned).
Adaptive Physical Education (APE)
Prerequisites: Physical Education 1
Credit: 1 credit
This elective course is designed for students who are considering a career in a Human Service field, Education or who enjoy supporting others. Students will be paired with classmates who have physical, cognitive, emotional, or behavioral challenges that impede the benefits of being active in a typical PE setting. Students will participate in team and individual or partner sports in a recreational setting, as well as other incorporated physical activities that promote movement and overall health. This course may not be used in lieu of PE 1 to satisfy the graduation requirement. (This course can be repeated as space allows, however; only the first credit earned will be counted towards total credits earned).
Dance
Prerequisites: Physical Education 1
Credit: 1 credit
This class focuses on technique and students will study a variety of dance styles as well as dance history. Students will be required to dress out and participate every day. A dance recital at the end of the semester is required. Dance students are graded on performance, class participation, tests and projects. (This course can be repeated as space allows, however; only the first credit earned will be counted towards total credits earned).
