VAST 205- 01 Spring 2019
New Media
New media art is an art genre that encompasses artworks created with new media technologies, including but not limited to digital art, computer graphics, computer animation, Internet art, interactive art technologies, computer robotics, and art as biotechnology. Students will examine the impact of new media on art and artists, will research the work of artists who use new media processes to produce art, and will research and create new media artworks within a college-wide collaborative atmosphere.
New Media art is constantly changing. Students will build on basic digital skills but the most important skills for the student to learn are: how to teach yourself what you need to know in order to realize your ideas; how to find ways to realize your ideas given the skills and resources you reasonably can acquire; and how to partner or collaborate with others who have skills you need but don't have. Collaboration and process will be emphasized through large-scale and long-term projects. Throughout the course, students will be involved in the research and development of projects. The ultimate goal is for students to create conceptual and idea-based projects that use digital technologies as tool for expressing content.

Project #1 Measuring Histories
Description:
After looking at the work of Sonya Clark and artists who use data visualization, you will complete the following instructions:
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Think about an aspect of your personal or cultural history that is hard to imagine
2. Select a material to quantify, measure, and actualize that history
3. Or, do something familiar to you for as long as you can and measure it to see what it lines up with from your personal or cultural history
Please title this piece.
You may use any media that you want, what’s “new” about it is the use of measurements or data.
You can make prints, many small sculptures, use Photoshop or AI, draw or paint. For example, make a paper airplane for every mile your grandfather traveled to get to the United States.
Evaluation:
Formal 5pts: What medium did you chose and how does it relate to your concept? How did you use color, form and repetition to relate to what you were measuring? How is the piece composed?
Technical 5pts: How is the piece made? Does it show skill in the handling of the material? Does it show attention to detail?
Conceptual 5pts: How does the piece document, display or visualize what you are measuring? How does the form relate to the content? Does the piece engage the viewer through its scale?
Makey Makey Interactive Art
Description: Interactive Art can be broad in scope but requires viewer or audience participation to activate the work of art. Using the Makey Makey, a basic game controller, create a work of art that is interactive.
You are making a switch and you can decide how and what the switch triggers.
Examples include but are not limited to:
· An interactive drawing/painting that plays sound when touched
· An interactive sculpture that triggers a video when touched
· An interactive sculpture that controls a game when touched
· An interactive musical instrument
You may use other lower tech tools to create this project. You may use a combination of tools and you may need to get other supplies to complete your project.
Process:
· This is a project in prototyping and design thinking. It is possible that your project only be a proof of concept and not wholly complete.
· We will spend the first part of the project getting to know the board, trying out programs and refining our ideas.
· After the project is over you will be returning the boards so you must document the project by taking photos and possibly video of the piece.
· You must demonstrate to me that you have some understanding of how your circuit works.
· You will also hand in a detailed research write-up when the project is due.

Constructed Reality /////
Objectives: You will
· Create a staged photo or scene for a video
· Use lighting, sculpture, makeup and costume to create a scene
· Use 360 cameras and apps to create a scene for VR
· Edit and export your piece for VR
Description: After experimenting with the basics of Google Cardboard and VR content, you will create your own Constructed Reality piece. The piece may either be a short video scene(s) or a series of still photos. Looking at artists who stage photographs using costuming, lighting and makeup, you will create a your own image. Because this is VR content, it is important that you consider every inch of the space and every aspect of the image. The idea and concept behind the scene is up to you. We will be looking at examples of constructed reality and discussing VR, simulation and hyperreality. Your classmates will serve as assistants. If you are taking video it should be between 90 sec and 5 minutes. If you are taking still you should have a series of 3-5 images.
You will need to download
· Google Cardboard
· Google Cardboard Camera
· Google Street View
· Theta S
· Theta+Video

Projection Mapping
Objectives: You will
· Learn projection mapping software basics
· Consider the relationship between 2D and 3D objects
· Collaborate on a finished project
· Become familiar with artists who use projection in their work
Description: You will work in teams of 3 to create a projection mapping project and installation. You must combine 3D objects either built, found or architectural spaces with projection. You should first experiment with materials and surfaces for projection—fabric, walls, mirrors, sculptures, toys, glass, people are all potential areas for projection.
You can project stills or video content.
As a group, you must determine the content and style of your work. I will work with each group to facilitate a topic.
Part 1- Content creation, projection experiments
Part 2- Installation
Part 3- Documentation** You must photograph and videotape your installation since it will only be installed temporarily.
You will need to download:
Projection Mapper (Optimo)
Prspctv
There may be other apps that you find useful or discover on your own for this project.
Other trials, like Mad Mapper are watermarked but are more powerful.
The department has 4 small projectors available for your use. The AV department has larger projectors available for checkout via the MRC. You may also want to use older equipment—slides, overhead projectors, film strips etc
Evaluation:
Formal: 5 pts, What is the experience of the installation like for the viewer? How do we enter the work and how does it engage the viewer? How does the work use the element of time? How does the work use color and light? How does the work integrate and relate the objects/space?
Technical: 5 pts How are the videos/stills edited and presented? Did you carefully line up and match up the projection to the surfaces? Did you consider the entire space to create a complete experience? Did you document the installation with photos and videos and turn this in via Google drive.
Conceptual: 5 pts How do the surface and projection image relate to each other? Does the work feel connected and cohesive? What topics are you exploring in the work and how does the viewer connect to them?
