Advising, mentoring, and recommendations

Will you write me a recommendation letter?

If you would like a letter of recommendation from me, please do the following:

Research with students

Would I be a good fit for your research group?

Core math (Calculus and Linear Algebra) is a prerequisite for doing research with me. Differential equations and probability are a big plus. Dynamical systems, analysis, and PDEs ... even better!

I work on a variety of projects, but most of them involve mathematical modeling in some way. I'm happy to work with students who have interest in either analytical or computational approaches (or both!). I look for student collaborators who curious, creative, collaborative, and enthusiastic.

I prefer to work with students as long-term collaborators. This means that I’m more likely to accept you as a summer research student if you also intend to continue working with me during the school year. The most common way to do this is by registering for an independent study course (Math 196).

How do I get a position in your research group?

If you are interested in working with me, I encourage you to reach out to me via email or apply to my postings on the HMC URO site.

The number of students in my group varies depending on projects, professional commitments, and funding. Unfortunately I cannot accept all qualified students. If you are not initially accepted into a research position with me, I encourage you to inquire again in a future summer or semester.

Can I be your graduate student?

No, I do not take graduate students. Harvey Mudd College is an undergraduate institution and we do not have graduate programs.

Should I apply to grad school in math?

If you're asking yourself this question — or any question about the process of considering or applying to a graduate program in a math-related field — I invite you to check out the page for my seminar on applying to grad school in math.

The in-person seminar is open to HMC students only, but the materials are freely available for anyone.
