Canvas Roles at HMC
Canvas Roles at HMC
Default Canvas roles
Student: The Student role is for students who are officially registered for a course. They are added automatically by the integration scripts that synchronize Canvas with the portal. If a student drops a course, they are automatically removed from the course. Students can access and interact with course materials and can submit assignments. See also the Auditor role.
Teacher: Faculty who are officially assigned to teach a course in the portal will be added automatically to the course site by the integration scripts that synchronize Canvas with the portal. The Teacher role grants a user course admin permissions, giving them control over their assigned course or courses. Additional faculty can be added manually with the Teacher role and they will not be removed automatically by the scripts. See also the Faculty Observer role.
TA: These users have permissions similar to teachers. The TA role is meant to support the teacher role. At HMC the TA role has access to the gradebook and can enter grades. TAs must be added manually to a course site.
Designer: These users are permitted to access and create course content, including announcements, assignments, discussions, and quizzes. However, Designers cannot access grades. This role can be used for teaching assistants who are assisting an instructor with managing the course site but who is not going to be involved in grading student submissions. Designers must be added manually to a course site.
Observer: Observers have the fewest permissions. They can view course content but cannot interact with the content. For example, they cannot submit assignments or create Discussion posts. Observers must be added manually to a course site.
Additional HMC Canvas roles
Auditor: The Auditor role is identical to the Student role, but is used either for students who are officially registered as Auditors in the portal, or who have asked to unofficially audit a course. Auditors who are officially registered as an auditor will be added automatically by the integration scripts. Unofficial auditors can be added manually and will not be removed by the integration scripts.
Tutor: The Tutor role is based on the TA role, but does not have access to the Canvas gradebook and cannot create course content, such as new posts to the Discussion tool. We created this role specifically for the AE tutors, but it can be used for other purposes. Tutors must be added manually to a course site.
Faculty Observer: The Faculty Observer is based on the Observer role, but can see a few additional items. They can view Analytics, Question Banks, and can see who is in the course (People tool). We created this role for faculty who are not teaching the course, but would like to view the course materials.
Librarian: The Librarian role was created for Sakai and we have recreated it for Canvas. This role can view the course calendar, discussions, student groups, can manage assignments, quizzes, question banks, and Canvas pages. Librarians must be added manually to a course site.Â
