Abstract: Sean and Lindsey will describe the work to make the Los Angeles Tech Ecosystem more inclusive. Our mission at Bixel Exchange is simple: we help create career pathways for diverse youth and empower entrepreneurs with the goal of creating a more prosperous Los Angeles. Our LA Tech Talent Pipeline program, a partnership with LA Mayor Eric Garcetti, connects low-income, diverse students and opportunity youth to careers in the fast-growing technology sector. In 2017, we placed 100 low-income students into paid tech internships and connected 8,000 students with tech companies through work-based learning opportunities.

Abstract: Dr. Bobb will discuss the national challenge of establishing equity in education in a time of deep social and political divisions. The demand for a technical and talented workforce, particularly in computing, is increasing unabatedly. Coincident with that demand, the demographics of the country are swiftly changing, never to return to what they once were. In this talk, Dr. Bobb will address the tensions inherent in a social structure that is resistant to change and an economy that requires it.
