Reading Plus is an online reading program that helps students become better readers.
At the beginning of each school year, all students are given a beginning of the year (BOY) screener to determine their reading skills. Reading Plus is used by CMS to screen students three times a year; the beginning of the year (BOY), the middle of the year (MOY) and at the end of the year (EOY). There are three sections to the Reading Plus screener; an interest inventory, a vocabulary section and a reading comprehension section. After students complete the three sections, the Reading Plus program assigns them lessons based on their individual needs. Students must complete their assigned lessons each week.
The Reading Plus beginning of the year screener measures students':
Interest and confidence in reading
Vocabulary grade level
Reading comprehension grade level
Fluency -Words per minute (wpm) they can read
All Reading Language Arts teachers began giving students the beginning of the year screener the week of August 22nd of this school year. We have now tested all students except new students who have only recently enrolled at Chapa Middle School.
The week of September 12th will be the first week that all students are assigned lessons and the first week that they will be held accountable for their grade in Reading Plus. All students will receive an overall grade each 9-Week grading period and this grade will be a Major grade. Please see the flyer for more information.
For the first 9-Week grading period, the weeks graded will be:
Sept. 12 - Sept. 18 (week 1)
Sept. 19 - Sept.25 (week 2)
Sept. 26 - Oct. 2 (week 3)
Oct. 3 - Oct. 9 (week 4)
Each grading week begins on Monday and ends on Sunday. This is part of the program and so grade reports will be run on Mondays for the previous week. See the flyer for more information.
