Counseling and guidance lessons are offered to every classroom at Negley Elementary School. Social emotional learning topics are chosen through observation and needs assessments. I encourage you to talk about these topics at home with your child. Look for our updates and counseling topics in Mrs. Crowthers’ weekly newsletter for more information.

Counseling groups are conducted across all grade levels. Please keep in mind, groups are not only determined by parent referral. Teacher referral, the RTI (response to intervention) process, as well as observations in and out of the classroom are also taken into account when forming guidance groups. Participants are referred for various reasons, including, but not limited to, familial changes, grief, self-esteem, self-control, organization, and friendship concerns…Groups are 5-8 weeks and students will fluidly move in and out of the groups as needed throughout the year.
School counselors are not therapists. We will meet with individual students on an “as needed basis” and for check in purposes. If you feel a situation calls for weekly, intensive counseling sessions, or that your family needs additional support, please do not hesitate to call us for outside resources.
Counseling approaches include both “play therapy” and "solution focused", rather than "problem focused". Students will work on communication and coping skills while playing games, role playing, art, and participating in various problem solving group activities. The goal is for students to apply coping strategies to a variety of situations, in and out of the academic setting.
Confidentiality: An effective counseling relationship requires the basis of a student’s right to confidentiality. This ensures that we won’t share disclosures with others except when it is authorized by the student, or when there is a clear and present danger to the student and/or others. Trust that we have your child’s best interest at heart and will include you on difficult conversations, without crossing the ethical line of confidentiality.
Mentors can be an important influence in a child's life. If you are interested in your child receiving a mentor (30 min a week), please reach out. Mentors can make a positive difference in a child’s life, just by spending quality time with students on projects, games, etc... They are not teachers nor are they counselors, nor are they expected to be. If YOU are interested in being a mentor for a child. Please contact us. We would LOVE to have you!
