This poignant play by the author of Tell Me Another Story, Sing Me a Song; A Little Something for the Ducks; A Scent of Honeysuckle and A Bag of Green Apples is the story of two women, Margaret and Jessie, who have come to Jessie's childhood home to put it up for sale. While Margaret goes to find a real estate agent, Jessie has conversations with herself as a girl and with her dead father and her mother.
While her parents are away on holiday, poor Alice finds herself bored out of her wits and forced to stay with her dreary Aunt Mathilda at her even drearier summer home. But after accidentally conking herself on the head, Alice discovers that a world of wonder and whimsy awaits her right behind Aunt Mathilda’s looking-glass. Littered with talking dodo birds and malicious Red Queens, Alice’s adventures teach her not only the importance of bravery, but that being true to oneself is the greatest conquest of all!
Four masked, smiling interviewers interview a scrubwoman, a house painter, a banker and a lady’s maid. It is commonplace and familiar enough, except that suddenly, the most innocent statements are foreboding. As the interviews progress, we are stung by the intensity and viciousness of the contest. The questioners are trying to destroy the dignity of the four clients, and the latter fight to hold their self-respect. It is never resolved. Abruptly the scene changes—a street, a subway, a psychiatrist’s office, a confessional—but throughout, this compelling involvement continues. And the sense of familiarity continues as well.

Defying Gravity examines the 1986 Space Shuttle Challenger disaster through the experiences of Teacher, who died in the crash, and her daughter Elizabeth. The play draws parallels between the past and present, travelling as far back as the nineteenth century in order to allow impressionist painter Claude Monet to discuss his perceptions of the world. Jane Anderson’s free-flowing, stylized drama takes the audience on a journey through history to explore people’s dreams and goals in life. On arrival, each is given a pseudonym drawn from Cluedo before being introduced to the blackmailer. Each is handed a weapon, at which point the lights are switched off and the blackmailer is killed. Can the guests uncover the murderer before they all become victims?
