About the Director...

My name is Maria Slaughter and I am the Choir Director at DMS as well as the Theater 1 teacher and 7th Grade Volleyball Coach. I am also the sponsor for UIL Impromptu Speaking. I am originally from San Antonio and this is my third year teaching! I graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) in December 2017 with a Bachelor of Music in Music Studies degree. While at UTSA, I interned with the San Antonio Children's Chorus, worked for UTSA's Student Conduct and Community Standards and Information Center, as well as participated in musicals, operas, and plays, and joined the professional music fraternity- Sigma Alpha Iota.

Personally, I love traveling whenever I can. My last adventure (Pre-COVID) took me to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and in the summer of 2019 I traveled to Scotland, England, Ireland, and New York City to perform and attend a training! I also have a magical love of Harry Potter, Disney, painting, and playing ukelele! When I'm not at work, I am usually on an adventure or relaxing at home with my canine sidekick, Freckles!

Advanced Treble Choir

Our Varsity Treble Choir consists of 7th and 8th graders who have at least one year of choir experience and have auditioned for this elite group of singers. These singers are invited to participate in Region choirs and Solo and Ensemble. This choir performs at UIL Concert and Sight Reading, football games, assemblies, pep rallies, and more!

Advanced Tenor Bass Choir

Our Advanced Tenor-Bass Choir consists of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders who have at least one year of choir experience. These singers are invited to participate in Region choirs and Solo and Ensemble. This choir performs at UIL Concert and Sight Reading, football games, assemblies, pep rallies, and more!

Intermediate Treble Choir

Our Intermediate Treble choir consists of 6th and 7th grade treble singers. These singers are invited to participate in Region choirs, Solo and Ensemble, and UIL Concert and Sight Reading.

Beginning Mixed Choir

Beginning Choir consists of 6th and 7th graders who are new to choir. They are invited to participate in the Central Texas Children's Choral Festival as well as special performances like the Kyle Tree Lighting throughout the year.
